What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Another incredible value 13-year-old wine from Veleta: their 2010 Tempranillo Reserve. Just starting to show some complexity on the nose with a bit of saddle leather. Still pretty intense fruit and noticeable tannins. :wine_glass:

G. B. Burlotto Barolo 2019, Langhe, Piemonte, Italy

Very light colour, pale ruby. Red fruit like cranberries, red cherries, lively and juicy. Charming rose aromas. Two other relatively weak notes - vegetal and dust.

Light in mouse as its colour suggested. Low but tight tannins. Light body. Medium acidity is at a desirable level. It’s easy to swallow, but my mouth would then shrink and feel tight over ten seconds afterwards. Didn’t notice its aftertaste since all my attention was captured by such a tannic finish.

Great concentration, but not a joyful experience with no decanting. I put it back in frdge and waited for next day. The wine’s quality tannins and good acidity created a long ageing potential, and I just hope it is also a great treat today.

Had the 2020 a few times this last year and it’s just a monster. I let it sit in the glass for an hour and it really opened up.

Needs like 20+ years to calm down

1997 Albert Grivault Pommard 1er Cru Clos Blanc

2nd of 4 and this might be a pretty good auction buy!

I hadn’t looked at the back label first time around but this time I did:

Apparently this was selected by the Chevaliers du Tastevin Jury. Yeah

Anyways, pretty close to the first one but with a little more tanins still left. Very good wine.

We had this with lamb loin in a light cream sauce and gratin dauphinois. Smashing.

Exceptional dry Vouvray. Tree fruit in the pear spectrum. A little bitter pithy note towards the finish. Haven’t had this cuvĂ©e before, but loved this.

Low acidity, mild tropical flavors, soft, easy drinking. Similar to those bland Alsace whites (or the new Elio Sandri white).

1995 Lanessan

Much better than the first two. Lot of funk on the nose so i gave it 2 hours of air épaulée. Leather, oak spices and black fruited. Plenty of acidity and the fruit is still showing up to the party. Nice bottle

Terry, I keep expecting to see the bottles in a snowdrift! Nice to see your weather is holding up for at least a few more days

Before dinner, we opened a bottle of 2021 Zingara Pinot Grigio. Some Pinot Grigio just tastes like lemon water. Not this one. This has a nice acidity, but also minerality and even a bit of earthiness. My wife really liked this one. I would grade it about a B. But I’m also not a huge fan of Pinot Grigio/Gris, take my grade with a grain of salt. (Full disclosure: My friend owns Uva Imports in Atlanta, which imports this wine. But I paid full retail.)

With our dinner of penne pasta in a lemon butter crab sauce we had 2020 Goodfellow Willamette Valley Chardonnay. This was great. A nice backbone of acid and minerality with apple notes, and maybe a bit of lemonade. As my wife put it, “It has none of that Chardonnay buttery grossness.” :joy: I should also note that there wasn’t the slightest whiff of smoke taint, and I was looking for it (as I can’t help but do whenever I drink a 2020). I really should have bought more of this when I had the chance. (The label looks weird because we bought this bottle at the winery, the labels hadn’t arrived or at least hadn’t been applied yet. They had to put on a generic label so that it was legal to sell.)
