What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Thank you. But I also realized my post was misleading. Only the first bottle was at lunch (Grivault), the next four were for dinner and the last three for the following night’s dinner.

So I’ll say I lunch adequately :slightly_smiling_face:

The high quality natural cork did a fine job on this bottle. It needed air to open. Slightly green golden colour at first and fresh herbs on the nose, but this disapeared after about an hour. It has the vintage tight structural backbone cushioned with peach, anise, praline and butter. Very Meursault in the nose and taste, maybe more Puligny in structure. Utterly convincing top 1er cru level here. Impressive.

2 from Rioja that are completely unknown to me but were each recommended by a pintxos bar in Logroño and a restaurant in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Both were aged in combinations of barriques and American oak, but the enjoyable levels of complexity and sufficient traditional approaches pleased and paired deliciously with local dishes. I truly wish I can find them in my (US) market.

Love the meaty style of this producer. Recently had a 2005 and 2001. I should seek out some 98 as I love this vintage in Pomerol.

This is going tertiary, with a balmy sous bois nose and relaxed red fruited pallet. Slightly rustic tannins (approaching Pommard here) in the otherwise comfortable finish. None of the 2008 accidity. Maybe it aged a little fast, but very enjoyable. Gives good hopes for the higher end 2008s.

Beautiful 33 year old bordeaux. Seems some bottle variation here as mine was stunning. Immediately open for business with a classical nose of cassis, red fruits, earth, leather and herbs. Palate had a incredible mix of bright, fresh red fruits mixed with those amazing secondary/tertiary mushrooms, soy, truffles. Long silky smooth tannins balanced everything perfectly. Note to self: Buy more bordeaux and live another 30 years.

L’eclat de rire de la table
A delicious finishing up of the bottle of this wine that I opened a couple of days ago. These were by far the most enjoyable glasses from the bottle. Tonight this was killer alone and killer+ with a nice Comte cheese!

Love this wine. How’s the 2020 compared to prior vintages?

Delicious. Fresh fig nose. Lots of nectarines on the palate . Very long finish with hints of lime and orange peel. Comes off more like a Spatlese.

2019 Huet Vouvray Le Mont Demi Sec

From CT review:

Really refreshing green apple /honey/lemon curd taste to this. Distinguished rain water finish which really made the difference for me. I would overall agree with @acyso that the dry version is more interesting but on the other hand this is more joyous and up front fun. Less sweet than I would have expected, the Demi Sec here comes across more as off dry with a barrel of ripe apples to it rather than heavy sweetness. I would love to try this with say a heavy curry like a Rogan Josh.
Score: 93. Relative to expectations: ++

The Grivault really piqued my interest since I have only ever had their Meursault. The first one I can recall is IIRC the 1988 Clos des Perrieres which was (again IIRC ) the first vintage after they had to replant a lot of the vineyard … and the wine was stunning.

It was my first time with their red as well. I used to buy their Bourgogne Blanc which is totally old school and often needs a few years to integrate the oak. I’ve also enjoyed their Clos des Murgers and 1er Clos Perrières with some age on them. But this Pommard made me realize that I might have overlooked their red.

Limited experience and limited taste “memory” specifics, but I do recall really enjoying my few bottles of the 2017 over the past couple of years. This 2020 was a chameleon for me. I drank it over a few days. It started out with too brightly acidic fruit for my taste, but the last couple of glasses were great. Strong flavorful fruit, an almost gravelly mouthfeel, and enough acid to energize but not overwhelm.

Opened yesterday and drink through now. Lovely red fruit bouquet with some peppers vanilla and herbaceous nose.

Over sweet in mouth. No structure. I can sense alcohol both in nose and mouth. 16% ABV……

Needed some Nebbiolo for a pasta mushroom dish.
Sandrone’s 2016 Valmaggiore is finally starting to open up and is very enjoyable.

I assume that was to pair with. If not, you sir are cooking with good plunk!

Haha indeed. But a bit of the wine next to it was sacrificed…

2008 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin VV
In a good place, mature, typical 08 fineness. Relatively light on its feet, with truffley black fruits.

2017 Domaine La Garrigue Vacqueyras
Another day, another wine…
I opened this one to pair with our weekly “Omaha Steaks Perfection Burger” The wine opened with fruit and gravel, but the “garrigue” soon took over. Very nice mixture of herbs and stone with the fruit. Good match for the Beef Brisket burger.

P.S.
-We actually visited the property and had a tasting there in 2000. How the years have flown by (“like a broken down dam”)

-The Omaha Steak Perfection Burger Sampler pack has been very tasty. Tonight’s Beef Brisquet Burger was maybe the least “gourmet” but still solid.

So happy to see the wines of Virginie on here!!! Amazing family and a joy to visit them in the region every time we’re there. Both her, her parents and her brother (disclaimer - I am the Danish importer of Fabien’s champagnes) have such amazing QPR bottles…
