“Old Peculier” is one of my alltime favorite English Ales. Is it being imported into the USA again? I haven’t seen it in the Bay Area and it was my understading that it hasn’t been imported for a year or so.
Agreed Pliny the Elder is more palatable from bottle, but it’s still way outside my tastes.
Went to Mill Valley Beer Works for the first time yesterday. Their house brews were a Porter (quite good but a touch coffee flavored, still I liked it) and and ESB (floral nose ala so many CA brews. ESB should have a bitter finish but not overt hop aromatics, not my favorite). In the end, I had an Old Speckled Hen yesterday, always love that beer…
Great place, great setting, I’ll be back when in the area…
Farmers Harvest seems to be doing a good job of putting new items in the cooler. They also sell small formats individually making it easy to try new things even if I can often find most of their items cheaper elsewhere. They got in some stuff from Caldera recently, much of it in the can.
Caldera Brew Co. Pale Ale - 5.5% - Peach and orange aromas. refreshing and light on the palate. Easy drinking light basic ale.
Caldera Brew Co. Ashland Amber - 5.6% - Not as big as Red Seal or Boont, my go-to’s. Ripe malt character with some notes of fig and orange. Pleasantly bitter hops kiss on the back end that lingers in a gentle way. Pretty good though the malt character isn’t as strong as I would prefer on the palate.
Just had me my first taste of a young lady by the name of Sofie (French by way of Illinois maybe?). She started out with a bit of a sour tang that was concealed by her alluring perfume. Nonetheless, as the evening warmed her up, her tartness melted away to reveal a terribly complex, somewhat balanced, yet always skirting the line with a bit of sourness. She’s a feisty one (enjoyed her a bit more than her cousin Matilda), but I’d still prefer to spend a night with her Pere, Jacques (not that there’s anything wrong with that!).
