I don’t buy regional Bourgogne all that often, but a few nice ones recently have peaked my interest in the category. Looks like this topic hasn’t been discussed for a few years, so it may be time to pose the question to the board again.
I’m open to any suggestions, though since this is largely a value driven category, I’m less interested in \ very expensive ones (Leroy, Roumier, Coche, etc). I’d love to hear about reds and white both.
Ones that I’ve liked include the Arlaud “Oka”, Rene Cacheux “Les Champs d’Argent”, Javillier “Cuvee des Forgets”, Leclerc “Les Bons Batons”.
Are there particular producers that you like? Particular vineyards?
I like Barthod’s Bourgogne, which comes from the Bon Batons vineyard a stone’s throw from Chambolle Musigny. I think Roumier uses same plot to make his Bourgogne, which is as rare as hens teeth (to borrow Jeremy’s analogy!).
It’s red fruited and drinks like a baby CM. It’s more accessible early than her other wines but still has some structure to it.
But, do not pigeonhole yourself into just wines labeled Bourgogne. There are often better values from wines that come from the Côte Chalonnaise (from villages like Givry, Mercury and Rully): from lesser villages in the Cote d’Or (like Marsannay, Fixin or Auxey-Duresses); from regional wines from the Cote d’Or (like Cote de Nuits Villages); from Chablis or, with respect to whites, from the Maconnais. I don’t tend to drink a lot of Bourgogne, but my 4 favorites are Gibourg (not a lot made), Barthod, Cathiard and Tremblay.
Bourgogne rouge from famous producers can be an interesting proposition because some of them use non-domaine fruit or fruit from much younger vines, which is one of the reasons I’m sometimes wary.
