Weingut Schloss Lieser

I enjoy the wines, have been drinking some 15s lately which have been great. Definitely a bit bigger style but I enjoy it and it especially works well for me in the GGs. Have a few cases in total going back to 2012.

My favorites are their Niederberg Helden and the Brauneberger Juffer (Sonnenuhr).

If this actually happens, would be interested. A recent buyer of the wines but haven’t tasted many yet.

'94 Niederberg Helden Auslese* I had a couple of years ago was excellent. Big, bold, and brooding is a good way to describe it, but the acidity was there to keep it balanced.

I probably drank it way too young (alas).

An early Thomas Haag wine. His third vintage there.

I have a 2016 Schloss Lieser Doctor GG if anyone wants to come to St. Louis and drink it with me in a few years :stuck_out_tongue:

Opened one last saturday. Based on my bottle I would give it more than a few. Totally shut down.

That’s the only one I don’t have, started buying their cases in 2017. They’re all in long-term storage to prevent myself not being able to resist and opening one just like that.

2016 Doc GG wasn’t in the case. Was easy to find for peanuts as recently at 2019/20.

I’ve got some 2010’s and the 15 auction spat. Would be interested in joining if we could do something outside. The 10 juffer Kab is one of my favorites.

We can make that work. I’m on it.

I have a 2001 TBA if there’s ever a Lieser tasting in LA.

Cool. I’d love to participate. Thu-sat nights are best for me by far.

Anyone been to Schloss Lieser (either the winery or the adjacent hotel) recently? I will be there in November during the US Thanksgiving school break (if work schedule allows). My wife and son want to see some Christmas markets in Germany (we will also be in Frankfurt and Cologne during the trip). We will be at the Marriott Autograph SL hotel for a couple of days.

Any must try places in Mosel area? Or places with back vintage wines? I don’t necessarily need to bring stuff back to the US, but wouldn’t mind a bottle or two [or five  ] to enjoy while on the trip. Was thinking of tasting at JJ Prum and a couple of other places if they are open to visitors. I have seen the interesting posts lately about German Spatburgunder, Chard, etc. - would be cool to try something along those lines if that is available in the area, or any known restaurants/bars that would have it or that are good in general.

Looking at renting a car too, maybe through Sixt. A friend was in Germany recently and used his Amex for Sixt and it included insurance. So may go that route instead of car services.

Any thoughts either way would be helpful. Thanks as always. Will report back (after trip) on the experience.

Check the travel section for many Mosel threads.

The Schloss Lieser Hotel and Winery do not really work together. I stayed there a coupe of years ago and I was surprised that the restaurant only had one or two Schloss Lieser wines. Our stay was not that great. The hotel itself is beautiful. To be fair the hotel did not seem to have recovered from the pandemic.

Not sure when the Traben-Trarbach christmas market starts but I would recommend staying at the Bellevue in Traben-Trarbach. The xmas market is really nice, the whole town turns into one big xmas celebration. And there are couple of really good restaurants including Die Mosel.

Robert - thanks as always. Adding these notes to the list. I will dig through the Mosel posts.

That seems to be a letdown re: the hotel/winery, maybe it’s better by now. And we are looking into the car rental, so we can go see what else is around and not rely on taxi (if that even exists).

For some reason car rentals are cheap in Germany. I always do Hertz.

Last Saturday, a friend and I drove by Schloss Lieser on our way back from Traben-Trarbach. As Robert pointed out, the hotel and winery are separate from one another, even though the winery was once a part of the villa, which was built in the late 19th century by the German industrialist and politician Eduard Puricelli.

I would second Robert’s recommendations to eat at Die Mosel and stay at Bellevue, where we had lunch on the patio after tasting the 2023s from Martin Müllen. (Die Mosel was closed for lunch.) Although I have never been to the Christmas market in Traben-Trarbach, it is underground in various cavernous cellars.

I can also recommend Yong Yong, Brasserie, Schloss Monaise, and the Christmas market in Trier.

I checked and it looks like the Xmas market starts on November 22

Mosel Wine and Christmas Market - Traben-Trarbach.de.

I would double check to be sure. I was there last December during the Christmas and there was a really nice outdoor food market 2 minutes from the Bellevue. I had a delicious Flammekuech.

In addition to Die Mosel you know have Ʃmu a new Japanese restaurant started by a former Die Mosel chef and just down the road from Traben in Reils you have Heims.

If you can’t tell I LOVE Traben-Trarbach.

I distributed the Lieser wines for several years when Rudi Wiest was the American importer; I think 2017 was the last vintage I handled.
I have to say that the wines didn’t move me emotionally (save some of the more tensioned 2013s…) ; I admired their intensity, but found them too big for their respective prƤdikat station, not as filigree dancy as I prefer. I hear that he has refined the balance in a less fat direction in the meantime, but haven’t tasted since that period.
I have some lingering inventory of 2012-2017, if savvy hounds wish to sniff around.
