Busy weekend full of drinking and eating:
NV Vilmart Grand Cellier
Beautiful as ever, I could have 10 cases of this and I’d never tire of its energy and palate presence.
2002 Jean Milan Terres de Noel
Seemed more open than a prior bottle, but wow is the nose still soaring with violets, jasmin, oyster shell and minerality. Didn’t seem to have the same cut on the palate as before, but still a baby.
1996 Roumier Chambolle Musigny
Seemed a little tart and spiky to begin with, like it was unhappy having to be consumed on Labor Day weekend. But this settled in and became very bright and a great companion to food.
2002 Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux
Gotta love dead babies - only if they’re wine of course. An ethereal experience, weightless yet big boned, elegant but powerful. A real doozy and one to seek.
1999 Jadot NSG Boudots
May have been ever so slightly corked, but it was a tough call. In any event, showed some interesting cinnamon and spice notes, but seemed a little muted drunk alongside the 2002.
2002 Jadot NSG Boudots
Much more expressive, though this showed some oak still. Dark fruited and meaty, with interesting spices interspersed. Finish was a little rustic, but a nice bottle for sure. I’d hold.
2004 Jadot GC Estournelles (from 375)
Still zero green/celery salt. Fourth bottle I’ve tried, all “clean.” Came across simple in comparison to the aforementioned, but definitely a pleasant wine.
1990 Deutz Cuvee William
Grrr, I hate oxidized Champagne. Not a total loss but it’s color belies the fact that this particular bottle was mistreated or the cork sucked. Had another bottle from the same source and it was fine.
2004 Vatan Sancerre Clos la Neore (i think)
Super bright fruit with tongue raking acidity, but very classy and refined at the same time. My first experience with Vatan, tasty stuff.
2000 Mugneret-Gibourg CM Les Feusselottes
Singing it’s heart out, throwing sous bois, juicy/fleshy red fruits with a lengthy finish.
2002 Barthod CM Les Charmes
Came off as a grand cru imo - packed with fruit and just in a delicious place right now. A few sips seemed like it needed time (tannin) but others were smooth sailing. Yum.
1990 Kalin Cellars Cuvee D’Or (from 375ml)
Very pretty with tangerine and honeyed tropical fruits. Creme brulee also pops up - not syrupy or overly sweet, quite a treat with crackers n jelly.
