Maybe this doesn’t belong in WineTalk, but I figured here it would get some traffic and answers!
So what IS the history of WB? I can tell relatively easily from reading other threads that there was a mass exodus… or maybe exile?.. from eBob. But what’s the deal, why? How long ago was that? Etc etc etc?
If this thread is a bad idea for the owners/mods of the site, then my apologies and please remove it… and then answer me in PM
Not so sure it is an exaggeration. If you believe in freedom of speech then WB is your home. if not, and you’re okay with chinese style repression then Squires is your home.
There were some issues on eBob that led to mass bannings of several dozen posters. This board was started. Later on eBob moved from free board to subscriber only, and the vast bulk of people moved here.
I wonder what percentage of EBobers moved here. It seemes like a lot of the Euro members did not move. This BB is great but the the topics don’t seem to break down like the old Squires BB did (more Burgs, more CA, less stuff from London & Italy, etc.). In any event, Todd has done a great job and another example of the harder you work the luckier you get.
I’m guessing many of the European members are at UK Wine Pages - they seem to have pretty good activity levels as well. I don’t have time to look around, as I don’t have time to look around here that much either!
As for more topic breakdowns, the best solution is to do them oneself, like Ray Walker did with all his Burgundy weekly threads. Whatever you don’t see can, and should, be introduced! Make the community what you want of it, and you might be surprised what participation level occurs with the topics being introduced!
We used to have a lot of complaints that Wine Berserkers didn’t have any Burgundy conversations. Now, they dominate Wine Talk. I used to hear complaints also that the caliber of the tasting notes (rather, the caliber of the wine IN the tasting notes) was subpar, but you can see that this has changed drastically as well. It’s a fluid development, I’m sure, and I like both where it was, and where it is now!
