Vodka and Caviar

Not sure if this should have gone in the Beer/Spirits forum or not…but since there is food involved I just figured here.

Regardless of they type/brand/style of caviar…is there anything that I should specifically look for in a vodka? A specific brand/type that is best or works best?

Thanks.

Stoli, make sure you keep it in the freezer.

Serge, the reason I voted for Stoli is because I never got a headache from it. But I am not a spirits drinker so I defer to more experienced berserkers. [truce.gif]

I rarely eat caviar. But can’t imagine eating it with vodka. That can’t be normal? I am trying to imagine the vodka chasing the caviar, I would try it. It would be a great party. Outside buffet table, summer afternoon, shade trees, grass, a place to take a nap.

I love Vodka and caviar, but I don’t know if I can explain it.

Freezer chilling does diminish the aroma, but it adds a lot. The vodka becomes viscous and sweet, and very easy to drink. Recently I have been buying Ketel One, which has a kind of nice note of licorice. I’m not too crazy about Grey Goose, but I have enjoyed Chopin, the Polish potato vodkas have a nice clean taste.

I’d gladly eat caviar with vodka regularly but caviar is such a splurge, it’s rare that I can afford the kind of caviar that I like to eat. I’m fond of Ossetra, but Beluga is quite nice as well. Best I ever had was Iranian.

I suppose to me the 2 tastes just go together. They are in a way two takes on a “clean” flavor – the flavor of the sea, and an icy sweet kind of clean that is like water from a magic well…

My experience with vodka and caviar with Russian friends has mostly been with red “caviar” (salmon, I assume). It’s a pretty good match. I also don’t chill the vodka in the freezer, just my preference. As far as brands, Russkiy Standart is a pretty decent one at a good price.

Caviar and Champagne. Romanoff style.

I’ve done extensive vodka research at Red Square in Vegas over the years and these would be my top choices to pair with caviar:

  1. Youri Dolgoruki - my absolute favorite. Served chilled, with ice, in a cocktail, etc. Extremely smooth with just the right amount of bite on the finish. Could be hard to source depending on where you live.

  2. Original Polish Vodka

  3. Luksusowa - a potato vodka that is very hard to beat for the price.

Was thinking about grabbing a bunch of airplane btls (not from the airplane)…as to try out multiple types/kinds/brands without breaking the bank of full bottles.

Thoughts?

Using tiny bottles would limit your choices to the mass producers (Smirnoff, Stoli, etc.); not necessarily a bad thing, but the variety/quality will suffer.

Vodka tends to kill my taste buds and I like to taste my caviar so I always go with champagne. If you must have vodka, Russian Standard is as good a choice as you’ll find. I recently had a great QPR vodka. Its from phillips and its called Prairie. Its claim to fame is that its organic. Its a corn based vodka and was incredibly smooth when tasted side by side with some decent and semi-premium vodkas.
