Visiting New Orleans for the first time

I think I had a ham, cheese, and egg po-boy one time and something else the other. The thought of fried oysters makes me gag, so I definitely didn’t have that.

What are other places that do primarily po-boys?

I had the fried oysters. The oysters themselves were good. As a sammie, it left a lot to be desired

My favorite is Mahony’s: http://mahonyspoboys.com/

Po-Boys (originally poor-boys) are the essential sandwich of the N.O. area. While there are dozens of variations, the common thread is the crunchy styled, very light French Bread. Roast beef with gravy, hot sausage, and fried seafood including oysters, shrimp, catfish, and soft-shell crabs are favorites. Locals tend to get everything dressed (shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and pickles) but I prefer seafood poboys with just butter, lemon, and pickles. There are Po-Boy shops in virtually every neighborhood as well as restaurants such as Mandina’s and Liuzza’s in mid-city. One of the best Po-boy shops is also in mid-city and is called The Parkway Bakery. In the quarter, other than Johnny’s, I would look to Cafe Maspero on Decateur.

Is there any love for Root?

Jay; Helluva agenda! Looking forward to your observations upon your return…Have a great trip!

Cheers!

P.S. After your bayou tour if you have room and are hungry…South Street cafe in Slidell is quite good for po’boys.

Thanks Marshall!

My only real regret is that while we’re gone the temps here are going up into the 50s only to drop into the 20s as soon we’re back :frowning:. This Winter really has it in for me.

The fun begins. Our pilot called in sick, the flight is leaving an hour late and we’ll miss the connecting flight.

Oy.

Sitting in Miami, they got us on a later connecting flight. So much for Commanders Palace and the Garden District.

And it’s supposed to rain for the next three days in NOLA. Some days I really hate traveling…

Rainy NOLA is still beautiful.

I’m sure it will be. I’m feeling a lot better now that we’re in the city, albeit stuck in traffic on the way to the hotel. Weather is gorgeous.

Have fun!

Dinner at Herbsaint is very nice. Two fun tasting flights of Riesling and gamay, the lamb neck and the shrimp artichoke maitake dishes are wonderful, the pork belly and the mushroom and egg special are good.

Go early to Coop’s, no later then noon or you will likely will have to stand in line outside for a while.

Ahh they ran out of the lamb neck the night we were there!! Sounded so good.

It was like 30 degrees and sleety our whole trip in January. It was still fun. You’ll have a good time regardless of weather.

Old coffeepot served a good breakfast but I don’t know that the grits were so much better than others I’ve had. The sweet rice ball thing was good, the ham forgettable, the hymn singing impressive

Coops had very good fried chicken, the gumbo was okay. Very noisy.

The French quarter is beautiful to just wander around input I’m also glad we did the tour, historically informative and it helped orient me.

Lovely meal at Stella. They have a fantastic wine list, we drank the 2011 lauer kern 9 which while a bit less intense than I’m used to from lauer was delicious and a good match with the food.
Amuse bouche of dried beets and foie gras not entirely successful
First course, celery root and foie gras were both excellent
Second course, flounder and sweetbreads both excellent with a special shout out to the sweetbreads which I loved
Third course, duck five ways, loved four of them, didn’t bother finishing the fifth, swordfish everything about it was delicious other than the fish itself which was tough and tasteless. The crispy leeks it came with were fantastic.
Dessert, winter citrus was good but forgettable, the bananas foster was wonderful and perhaps the best overall dish we had.

Comfortable room, excellent service.

Breakfast at Stanley was disappointing. Arnold’s BBQ pork po boy was delicious but my pancakes (which some article described as among the best in the country) were mediocre at best. Lovely location on the park but the room reminded me of nothing so much as a Johnny Rockets
