2004 Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker’s Reserve- USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley (12/20/2013)
Did you ever find a bottle in your cellar and think to yourself “where the hell did this come from?” Well, this is that bottle, I have no clue but it showed up on a search of cabernet and was ripe for the pickings. Took this to a holiday party where it was promptly comsumed.
Dark color, hints of charcoal. Nose of cassis and medium toasted oak. It certainly reflected the cabernet heritage with a bit of old school California sauvignon. Tannins are rounded out but acid still holds everything together. Silky mouthfeel and medium short finish. (87 pts.)
It probably should have been decanted, but my wife and I took our time drinking it throughout the evening, so it was no big deal. We really enjoyed it.
I forgot how I disliked toy shopping.
The parents seeking hot toys are worse than point chasers after a new WA comes out.
Anyway, mission accomplished.
13.4% alcohol. Medium ruby. Expressive Cabernet aromatics. On the palate, excellent cab typicity in a light and agile style. Not a deep wine, but fairly long. I like this wine a lot - it comes across as a great example of what it is - a well made Cabernet from a good site in a very cool vintage. I’m looking forward to the '12.
2005 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon- USA, California, Napa Valley (12/21/2013)
After a lot of pinot and zin, all that were fine, this was a relief and well served to have been tasted last. Terrific kind of old school cab, with red fruit, spice and a flavor and acid set that speaks to cabernet that I enjoy.
Cracked an '06 Etude Cab last night, but it had a touch of heat damage. First bottle of that case that we didn’t love. Still drinkable, as the flaw was slight, but if I hadn’t enjoyed several other bottles from the case previously, I would immediately have written off this wine as a bad purchase.
2009 Kelly Fleming Wines “Big Pour” Oakville, Napa Valley
14.7% alcohol. Dark ruby red. Exceptional claret aromatics. On the palate, the wine is very deep and pure, highlighting black cherry, pepper and spice. Long aftertaste.
From Kelly Fleming Wines and winemaker Celia Welch. This wine, with a somewhat whimsical name, is a serious Napa Cab. The grapes are 84% Oakville Cabernet from the Kelly Fleming Vineyard and 16% Merlot from Oakville. Very distinctive and enjoyable.
Didn’t even realize this was the theme… This was a lucky find for cheap!
1992 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon- USA, California, Napa Valley (12/19/2013)
I was worried this would be OTH, but it was fabulous. Bright red fruits and lots of leather and cigar on the nose. Cherry, tobacco, and a hint of oak on the palate. Spicy finish medium length. Drink now. (92 pts.)
Not much I love better than a Match Cab, I must say I like the 05 Baconbrook a little better than the Butterdragon right now, but still great.
2005 Match Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Butterdragon Hill- USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (12/21/2013)
Dark garnet color, nose of cherry and spice. Smooth but not the velvet mouthfeel I’m used to with Match. Blueberry, black cherry and cassis on the palate. Long finish (92 pts.)
Watch out Frankie - about 10 years ago I (for the most part) walked away from Burgundy, Bordeaux and Napa Cab. Somewhat to my surprise, the only one I’ve drifted back to is the Cab.
My wine and I went out for a quiet holiday dinner tonight, sans kids. I took along a bottle of 2004 Larkmead Cabernet. Third time I’ve had this wine this year and it has been fantastic each time. Just a knock out nose which, to me, is such a hallmark of Larkmead cabs. On the palate, there’s sweet black raspberry and boysenberry fruit, with a full, rounded mouthfeel and a mild cedar note on the finish. Manages to come across as luscious without losing its sense of structure. I love it.
2008 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley- USA, California, Napa Valley (12/22/2013)
The wine looks Inky Purple colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Black currant (cassis), and Toast. It tastes like Raspberry, Black currant (cassis), and Bark. The body is Light/Medium. The wine has Polished texture. The wine finishes Medium. Oddly, I found this more enjoyable than the cab drinkers in the group.
