Virtual Tasting Series: Week 5 "Take a guess" ~~~> Cab!

One more reason to look forward to the weekend!

Checking in on my drinkability chart. I’ll be opening an '04 Scherrer, '05 Kuleto Native Son and an '07 Sojourn Howell Mtn. Hopefully.

Hmm I sure I can contribute

I’m screwed. What cabs are going to go with Kraft Mac & Cheese, chili dogs, garlic spaghetti, burritos and pizza?

The one that gives you a ride to the hospital to have your stomach pumped. neener

Thanks Brig! [cheers.gif]

As to the subject, I think I’ve heard of this wine. I’ll see what I can dig up neener

I’ll be at holiday dinners both tonight and tomorrow, lucky for me they’re at Morton’s and Ruth Chris I think I can find some cabs.

I am in for 10 notes and $100, not counting Wednesday’s bottle:

Myriad 2009 Dr. Crane - this was still very young. Dark classic Mike Smith Cab, violets, blackberries and maybe a bit of earthy coffee. Fabulous structure and length, wish I had more than one left.

FedEx just dropped off my 2010 Hayfork Cabs…

2006 Match Baconbrook - POP - beautifully clean though maybe a little light. After 2 hours of air - awesome!!!

I’ll open one if you do
but not tonight–05 Gemstone slow oxing

Opening Sunday night for football and brisket at Mallard Cellars.

jealous of the brisket…

Costco had USDA Prime for $2.59 a pound.

  • 2005 Match Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Baconbrook - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District (12/20/2013)
Floral, dark fruit and a little chocolate aromas really come out. Very pleasant initial taste that is really balanced. Just a hint of heat. Decently long finish. Enjoyable with steak and by itself. (92 pts.)

Two nice cabs tonight. Started with the 2003 Mondavi Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet which was cooked. Major bummer, as I was really looking forward to trying it. So, I consoled myself with a 2005 Myriad Spring Mountain Cabernet. Really nice, sporting sweet dark fruit, a great texture in the mouth, and mountain tannins that have settled down but still make their presence known. If you have any, pop the cork and give it about 30-45 minutes of air. You’ll be a happy camper. We were still thirsty, though, so the follow-up was my first Bressler Cabernet…also a 2005. Terrific stuff. More on the red fruit end of the spectrum, with red raspberry notes most prominent. Offered up a beautifully perfumed nose, too, which I’m always a sucker for. This was medium-to-full bodied and had a certain elegance to it. Per Fred Daner, I gave this two hours of air, which seemed just right.

A good night, despite the disappointing start!

It is officially published as Napa Valley Red Wine but it is 94% Cab

On the nose this is classic Napa–lots of blackberry, black currant and cedar. On the palate it also shows some tart red currant and an interesting bitterness which is a nice foil to the inherent sweetness. Throw in a little smoky camphor on the finish. Alcohol is noticeable but not over the top. My final bottle. My recommendation–drink up!

  • 2006 Anderson’s Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve - USA, California, Napa Valley (12/20/2013)
Decanted for 75 minutes, returned to the bottle for an hour and then drank over the next 90 minutes. I think this could have used a longer decant. Towards the end this opened up and revealed nice red fruit with some layered cassis and tobacco. Tannins still very evident. (91 pts.)

Great start guys. I had that Gemstone some time back and concur, its downward.
Those early Myriads are interesting. I was not a fan early on though.
No wine for me tonight as I still recover from Pinot-attack. Tomorrow is another day…
