Virtual Sommelier via QR Code

Hey Berserkers,
Wondering how many of you would use a QR based recommendation software that helped you find similar wines to what you love on a wine list. The QR code would live on the bottom/side/top of the wine menu, and on wine lists with dozens of pages, probably every few pages in their chosen location. You would just scan with your phone and it opens a webpage. No app download or anything.
For example, you could type in Gonon St Joseph (personal favorite), and even though they didn’t have Gonon, it would recommend something similar tasting. Might not even be syrah, but could be something like Schiopettino from Ronchi di Chialla assuming you were in an italian only restaurant.

Would you find value in this and whip out your phone to scan the QR code?

confused - where is the QR code?

Thanks Good call. I edited my post. But it would live on the menu, kinda like this.

so the user gets a wine list in a restaurant and the problem you’re solving is that they don’t know what to pick so you scan the QR code and your app asks the user to pick other wines they know they already like and then tells you which ones on the list are like that?

edit: ohh i’ve seen this before https://preferabli.com/

Yes. Or if you know, absolutely nothing, there is something called guide recommendations, which pretty much asks you the same thing I would ask you as a Sommelier. Are you looking for a red or white? Are you looking for a full or light body wine? Do you like Oaky Wines? Sweet or dry? Stuff like that.

I guess I don’t understand the point of scanning a QR code.

If you have the wine list information and my preferences, just show me the recommended wines.

I think your solution might add steps instead of removing them.

I totally get it. however the number of consumers coming through the door with the app and a preference history is probably .1% of total customers.
So the solution is not app based. It’s web based so anyone, regardless of preference history can use it.
The QR code function was made for people who don’t have the app on purpose as I certainly don’t want to download more apps on my phone. And not a one time thing.
Thanks for the replies. Very much appreciate it.

Will- I like the idea but it wouldn’t be for me. I personally like the interaction with a Somm, working together to find something that will match my palate preferences to the food being served- often this is multiple bottles that progress (sparkling to white to red or dry to sweet) throughout the evening.

However - I do see this working well in an environment where the restaurant does not offer staff that is knowledgeable in wine or a diner/guest/user who is unwilling/shy to ask for “help” selecting a wine off the list. To be able to scan a QR code, enter in wines that you’ve had and like (or your preferences) and then out pops a recommendation or two is terrific.

Bingo Roger.
Places with 80-150 wines on a list but no educated staff. There are thousands of these across the country.
That is the target market.
Thanks for the reply! Hope to catch you in SD sometime soon.
