Vinous re-visits the 'nightmare' 2008 vintage in Burgundy

No real surprises. Dom P2’s were excellent. 1988 showing I think was a bit disappointing because its such a great vintage probably just the bottles we had. 88 Krug Collection just needed some time and attention but couldn’t really revisit with 12 of us. 02 fantastic showing of course. 08 will be great still needs bit of time. I am usually a Krug guy but Dom probably took the night slightly for most of us.

Interesting; when we did the 08s this year a lot of people loved the 08 Krug. I own the 88 collection but haven’t opened one yet, a couple 88 regular bottlings have been great though. Alan and Rich were at that tasting too, I can’t remember what they thought about the 08 Krug though.

Of those Krugs, I preferred the Mesnil to the 164 by a slight margin and the 164 to the 2008. I’ve had the 2008 a couple of times since then, most recently being two weeks ago, and while I like it, I’ve yet to love it. I preferred recent bottles of the 1996, 2002, and 2004.

Interesting; I think I was vvf, Mesnil, 08, 164 in that order.

The VVF was also my favorite. We had largely the same order except for the 164 and 2008, which I recall discussing with you that night though the details are fuzzy.

Yeah we drank a Roumier or two that night…

I think something is wrong with that vintage of Esmonin. I’ve had it before several teams, and they were all cloudy.

That’s weird Ian. It was cloudy and so were couple others. I have one more bottle will report back when I open it.

I bought 6 (really cheap too), and they all had that cloudiness, and were really stemmy for the first 10 years too.

I’ve seen that from time to time in years like 2011. It never seems to settle to the bottom, either

Good to know. I didn’t buy any 2011 (it’s a wine I’ve learned does better in warmer years anyway, the stems just can be too much for me), but not shocking.

I’m hoping it’ll eventually precipitate and lose some of those qualities

By the way, the last couple of 2005s I have had have been quite good. I really liked a “lowly” Bouchard Beaune Therons.

Last night we drank a bottle of 2005 Jadot Corton Greves that I had kept in my warmer (63-68F) storage since release. While still pretty young in taste, the nose was inviting and the flavors intense and lasting.

BTW, 2005 Burgundy was the BWE* wine of year in 2008.
