Based on how good the 09 was and the following from Bruce “Of the three vintages that we now have in bottle, beginning with our inaugural vintage of 2008, the 2010 is particularly remarkable; possessing a wonderful restrained elegance imparted by the long cool growing season, while having the signature expressive fruit characteristics of Vine Hill Ranch cabernet sauvignon”
I’m going for 6, just like last year. Bruce is a great guy and if you are in Napa, make it a point to go by VHR, well worth it.
From what I’ve heard and seen the answer would be yes and no. While the whole vineyard is called Vine Hill Ranch, the property is diverse. The two parcels that BOND uses are unlike the rest of the vineyard. One is terraced into the side of the Mayacamas and the other sits on a large fan right up into the hillside. The rest of the vineyard that the VHR cab comes from sits squarely on the floor. So different elevations and expositions definitely come into play as do wine maker and pick calls.
That’s okay, I went through the ordering process and saw that the only options were 2-day and Overnight and for the coin, it has me passing. I know, I know, shipping to the east coast rant, but whatever. Maybe I should see if they’d send ground… or mule.
Had the '11 last weekend. It was very reminiscent of a Drinkward Peschon, yet fuller, rounder and more approachable for such a young wine and a hit or miss vintage. A recurring theme over the last couple of vintages is that this is a modern approach to a classic styled wine. Lots of black fruit, minerals with veins of red fruit throughout. Tannin in abundance, yet soft and accessible. I love these wines, the polish and attention to detail are undeniable. With a couple hours in the decanter, or several hours following a double-decant, the '11 is a very expressive, complex cab drinking quite well today. This could also be a hypothetical co-ferment of HSS and Dominus? Not sure why they don’t get more discussion - less xfactor, hype, hyperbole and a smooth allocation process I guess…
Jody- great comparison and it was Francoise that put them back on my radar when we were in Napa last week. When do these typically get released ? Definetly going to visit them on our next trip and the style sounds right in my sweet spot.
The '10 was glorious when I tasted it last year. I passed on the '11, as I was required to work with a 3rd party shipper and it cost me over 80.00 to ship 2 3 packs. But they are doing great things, and their customer service and accessibility is great.
Their offer is sent out in February. If their shipping policy has changed, I’ll be a buyer.
Fred, based on the notes you post and wines you drink, you’ll definitely enjoy these. As Gerald, said, these are offered in February, at the start of the spring offer season. They are not cheap at 150, but this, along with Greer are my favorite at this price point.
