Organic we got in spades. But you can get organic meat, that’s not the issue. Fining agents and refined sugar in the dosage seem to be the stumbling blocks (although the sugar thing seems to be bleeding into the raw food thing).
It’s the “and such” part that doesn’t work for the vegan crowd. In addition to the fining agents (which primarily come from animals) all sorts of bugs make it into the press. I learned earlier this week from Al Osterheld that ants in particular can contribute an unpleasant flavor to a wine’s bouquet.
Ok now…Get a few cases of yellow label…Go to Staples and get a pack of those sticky peel off labels. Put them in your printer and print a bunch that say:
VEGAN
Interestingly enough, it was this very subject that started me down the slippery slope to DSP with His Squirrelness. Our first “tiff” if you will.
I posed, in Wine Talk, the question of whether vegans would drink wine if they knew about the microscopic insect parts in it and he moved the post to Food and Wine. Considering we were talking bugs (and some people eat them) I found the move funny in an ironic way, but when I told him I found it funny (“Best laugh I’ve had all week, Mark.”) he was certain I was mocking him. Ensued the usual exchange of pithy retorts (“If I have to explain it to you . . . don’t contact me again.”). It’s from small events that a Berserker is spawned.
“Blanquette de Limoux Brut Bernard Delmas
A dry, creamy, full-bodied sparkling wine with a fine yeasty character in the aroma, and toasty green apple & lemon flavors. VEGAN. Certified Organic Grapes”
2007 Moscato d’Asti Mario Torelli
“Delicately sweet & “frizzante” (bubbly). Made with Moscato Rosso & Malvasia Rosso for grapey fruit flavors, with a little Trebbiano for lift & acid. VEGAN - Certified Organic Grapes”
Champagne Carte d’Or Brut Serge Faust
“The Real Thing! A dry, full-bodied brut from Champagne. Rich, full aromas, creamy texture and mature fruit flavors. Hints of yeast and nuts. VEGAN - Certified Organic Grapes”
Anybody whose veganism seeks, or rather insists upon, assurances of “purity” at these levels isn’t genuine. If they believe the possibility of traces or x parts per million are unacceptable thresholds I can assure them they’ve fallen short on a regular basis elsewhere.
