I will be in Vancouver for one night end of January. Since it will be my birthday, I’d like to go somewhere nice. Seafood would be great, but not required. Not too fancy as one of my ski buddies thinks all-you-can-eat buffet of General Tso’s chicken is the height of culinary excellence.
Hey, Paul. We ended up mostly bar hopping on our experience (which prompted my posts above). Outside of crap pub grub, we had a very nice lunch at Pourhouse Restaurant, but it doesn’t lean seafood. I did take Mark’s recommendation and we had a dinner at Dynasty, a Cantonese restaurant downtown that definitely leans heavily seafood. With that said, we were very, very rushed unfortunately and had to order and eat quickly so we could make puck drop at the Canucks game. It looked very authentically Cantonese and it was busy, so that’s usually a good sign.
I’m pretty open to anything. I am assuming Asian food to be a strength there, but I am not overly picky other than not real interested in elaborate tasting menu-type supper. Good food and relaxing vibe is all I need on this trip.
if you can get a reso… my current fav non asian food is Published on Main.
ignore the ‘it’s 1 michelin star’… it’s not… nothing in vancouver is anywhere near a star…
but - it’s very very good. really enjoyable spot… corkage friendly as well.
you don’t need to do the tasting menu tho they offer one. just a few items off their alc menu is good to go.
Looking for wine store recommendations in downtown Vancouver. Sailing on Viking to Alaska and want to bring a few bottles on board, so anything close to the Fairmont hotel would be helpful.
At the risk of hijacking Paul’s thread, I was curious if folks could recommend places to eat and source wine in Vancouver? I will be visiting with the family (wife and 11 year old boy) for a few days in mid-October, staying near Robson Square. We prefer small mom & pop places serving authentic food, not the Michelin stuff, and love Asian cuisines.
And any recs for things to do/see would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!
Not near Robson Square, but only about 20-ish minutes in an Uber or cab, dim sum lunch at Western Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant is excellent. Reservations a must. They make everything in house and their siu mai and har gow are 3x the size of what is served here. Everything I had was delicious. Corkage was $15-20, if I recall.
In/near Chinatown, the sandwiches at Say Hey on E Pender are really good. Again, more of a lunch thing.
Ophelia for Mexican was quite tasty also. Their wine list is limited.
I realize only one of those three options is Asian.
Marquis is good for wine, but I prefer Legacy. They have a walk-in if you’re looking for their higher end stuff.
We were in Vancouver in April - we went to Vij’s (https://www.vijs.ca) curry house which was excellent and nice and down to earth.
Also get to Granville Island market as they have a nice selection of food stands which is nice for kids for lunch. There is also a wine shop in the market (https://www.libertywinemerchants.com/) with a decent stock of wines - I picked up some Clos de Roilette Fleurie from there. Some of the other recommendations up thread may be better though as I just stumbled across it, it wasn’t sought out.
Also we didn’t actually go as we only came across it when we were at the end of the holiday but a Ukrainian restaurant in Gastown (https://www.kozakeatery.ca) looked fantastic, could also be a good lunch/dinner place combined with a bit of on foot sightseeing in downtown Vancouver.
Also in terms of things to do - definitely the Capilano suspension bridge and the surrounding park. Really nice for kids, you can get a free bus to and from Canada Place.
No problem- also do the flyover Canada in downtown. We also have an 11 year old boy and he loved it plus you can watch the seaplanes landing and take off while you visit which at least for our son kept him interested a while.
