Can we start a list of vineyards in the US that are selection massale (aka not clones)?
From a bit of research on here, right now I have:
Oregon
Cameron Clos Electrique
Eyrie
Abbey Ridge
Tualatin Estate
Goodfellow The Last Acre
La Chenaie Vineyard
Walter Scott Seven Springs Vineyard
Domaine Drouhin Oregon (but not Roserock?)
Ponzi Vineyards
Coeur de Terre Vineyard
California
Mt. Eden Vineyard
Roederer Napa
Holdredge Selection Massale
Some of Rhys Horseshoe, Bearwallow, and Alpine Vineyard
Cohn Vineyard
Komorebi
Quail Hill
Hanzell Vineyards
I’d imagine most old vine field blends are selection massale?
Could you elaborate a bit on what this means and why it would matter to a wine drinker (or at least why the question interests you)? Thanks. I guess it’s not something I know or have ever considered.
In my opinion it is part of making great wine for your grandchildren. So much of the work of a winery takes generations to show–but I would say the difference clonal selection and selection massale is mostly some genetic diversity. Over time, that genetic diversity helps to develop some of what I would call terroir: https://www.selectionmassale.com/latest/martin-texier-on-syrah-and-serine
