Quinta do Fojo has a feeling of mystery surrounding it as Douro wine producer. Its red wines are unicorns, rarely seen in the wild! Fojo historically supplied excellent old vine wines to a top Port brand as a backbone of their best Ports, as well as bottling their own wine starting in 1996. Margarida Serodio Borges is the owner and winemaker. She had a very hot start with lots of critical acclaim and then stopped making the Fojo table wines a few years after the turn of the century as she became a mother and she wanted to be present raising them. When the table wines from Fojo were available, they were scored well by the critics and were not easy to source! They are still tough to find today! Virtually unavailable in the US market up until now, much of what Margarida sold was in Portugal and exported to Brazil (where FOJO sells for +500€).

Additionally, Margarida also makes amazing white wines in the Vinho Verde area. There are NOT your typical fizzy Vinho Verdes – these are serious wines. Casa da Bouça is located in Nogueira, Lousada, on the right bank of the Sousa River in the heart of the Vinho Verde appellation. This is Margarida´s white wine and rose project with her husband’s property. For it’s entire existence, they sold the fruit to producers looking for high quality fruit farmed meticulously. The important aspect of this expansion of Margarida’s winemaking is that this allows her a much broader offering and higher production to meet market demand.
