UPS / Zachy's - 'Package Damaged'. How Concerned Should I Be?

Zachys has the add 1% of value option for insurance

I had a box from Winebid that was damaged in transit a few years ago. Kinda weird actually since Winebid still uses styro. The shipper (pretty sure it was FedEx) returned the box to Winebid and I was able to have the intact stuff re-shipped to me. I was relieved they didn’t discard/destroy it as that was what the shipping info initially indicated. I don’t recall if I had to intervene and have Winebid request it be returned to them or if it just automatically went back.

Yep! Luckily i did that with this shipment.

Thanks Greg! Exactly what im hoping for in this situation :crossed_fingers:

Haha perfect timing. This Monday I received a ā€œpackage damagedā€ mail from UPS. Was told by both UPS and the shop that it was sent back to the shop. The shop told me I would get a full refund when all details were in place.

To my big surprise UPS rang my door today with a package. I was unsure if I shouId even open the package… but as i REALLY wanted these wines and the shop had sold out in no time (whites from Domaine Ganevat) I opened it.

5 out of the 6 bottles I’ve ordered were there with only very minor scratches to two labels.

As the shop didn’t have anymore bottles for replacement i glady kept the five wines and had the shop refund the last bottle.

But UPS is awful overall! They once delivered me a package with three out of six bottles ordeded, where the labels on the remaining wines were filled with wine stains. They had repackaged it in a way so I didn’t notice upon delivery of the packagešŸ˜….

So atleast they let you know in this case. So it is a bit easier to deal with.

Ughhhh! So brutal! But at least you received 5 out of 6 bottles!! Id be thrilled with a knock at my door today, ha!

And yeah, UPS is literally the worst. Ive talked to multiple people including supervisors just to try and confirm they still have the package and didnt dispose of the whole thing (again, their wording on the notification is scary)…and they wont give me much. Keep saying they can only talk to the shipper, which means I’m now at the mercy of Zachy’s. Good times

Taking advantage of this thread to ask a more generalized question–if given the choice, do people here prefer UPS or FedEx?

I prefer FedEx, but haven’t any issues with either of them.

GLS has also been good for me in California.

I mean…as of this moment, i have a STRONG preference towards FedEx

My questions would be very much about the store and what packaging they used. A good shipping box should be pretty darn resilient to dropping and crushing.

Cardboard inserts. I can’t imagine them all breaking but who knows .

Best answer is neither. But not many, if any, alternatives.

There are many threads covering this topic. It is dependent on so many variables for each individual. Driver and alternate drop off locations being the two most important.

The handling of circumstances in this thread has been covered before and is also widely variable, even by the same carrier.
Full disposal of both broken and non broken bottles, delivery of non broken bottles repacked or return to send. Spin the wheel for your outcome

UPS with UPS certified boxes has led to about 0.066% loss rate (in terms of bottles broken) for me so far shipping all over Europe

Befriend your UPS driver! Show appreciation and be generous with tips. It works wonders.

Once my longtime UPS driver left, I switched primarily to FedEx.

This happened to me as well. One of three bottles broken. Unfortunately the wine was 1905 Verdelho Madeira.

Still miss DHL

Quick update. This is not looking good. When i call UPS they say theyre inspecting the package…but Zachys said they believe UPS discarded the entire package. F*ckkkkkkkkkk. The prized bottles in the case were a handful of 1875 Isaias W Hellman Cucamonga Vineyard private reserve Angelica and Port. Litterally irreplaceable, as most of the remaining bottles left were destroyed in a warehouse fire some years back.

I keep telling myself ā€˜its just wine’…but im REALLY pissed off about this (i know everyone here can understand).

I had an experience last year quite similar to Robert’s. WTSO shipped me a mixed case of some PGC Pinot Noir and one or two bottles (don’t recall which) had broken. The cardboard shipping box had a corner that was sorta collapsed and stained purple, and with some movement of the box one could hear the rattling or tinkling sound of the broken glass - so pretty obvious there was damaged glass/wine in the box prior to opening. I looked back through my emails and confirmed it was FedEx (sorry, not UPS) that delivered the case. The labels on most of the intact bottles were stained and, of course, I had to clean off all sorts of glass particles from the intact bottles . . . but the juice inside those bottles has been damn tasty!! Good luck, Rich!
