Underground Cellar (wine seller/retailer) OUT OF BUSINESS

Maybe nothing new in this WSJ article that just came out yesterday:

Ok, what wine is everyone’s biggest regret not buying in this sale before it sold out?

Mine, were the ONX Wines Reckoning and Praetorian (two different wines). Saw those for $9 and hesitated one day too long early in the sale.

All the wines I put in my cart the night before evrytjing blew up and then didnt end up buying.

I had full shopping carts at points and somehow managed to not pull the trigger. I’m proud of myself, but also envious at some of the deals others pulled especially when shipping dropped. I think whoever ran that fire sale did a fairly good job moving the inventory at a decent pace just from an arm chair.

Good luck on shipping dates. Thought of that too. Bankruptcy never happens at a convenient time lol.

Just received an email saying they are issuing me a credit for some bottles I purchased in Phase 2 that they now say they don’t have. Thoughts on anything remaining that looks interesting? Tempted to just get a case of a sparkling, can always just make mimosas with brunch.

I don’t know much about bubbles, but the one that I am watching is the Portalupi Sparkling Rose. Lots of it remaining, but highly rated.

What else are you into? I have my eye on a bunch more.

Also, what wines did they not have in stock?

I am happy with the two wines I bought, Ragnaie RdM and Mazzoni Colline Novaresi. Glad to have those at the price offered. If I’d been a bit quicker I’d have grabbed some of the Elner Reserve Champagne, though I paused because I find Champagne not that robust and was uncertain of storage conditions.

If I wanted to buy now I’d consider the Cantina Comero Colline Novaresi. 2018 was a relatively poor vintage in the Langhe but better in the Alto Piemonte. Small producer, few notes available, but seems to be relatively traditional. If someone liked Nebbiolo and wanted wines to drink in the short to mid term, it could offer a good value proposition.

Have lots of cab, syrah/shiraz and pinot in cellar (I.e. unfinished/windowless basement area). Was thinking of adding something else to add some variety.

I had order 4 bottles of 2016 Ty Caton, 2 each of Four Rows cab and Tytanium red blend.

My recommendations that are not varietals you listed:

Seven Oxen Cassidy
Seven Oxen Zin
Portalupi Barbera
Portalupi Petite Sirah
Ocelli Grenache
Muscardini Zin

Thanks. I forgot about the Ocelli Grenache. I pulled the trigger on 6 of those and went way off radar and ordered 6 Riesling. New definition of 2 Buck Chuck, cost me $2 (including shipping) when apply credit.

There was some Calluna when I first started looking, some Penfolds Shiraz, a bunch of prima materia—I could have made use of all that. But I’m not losing sleep over it.
The only thing I’m eyeing now, too many cases in already, are the rose sparkler mentioned above and some of the Cali sparkling Riesling. Now, do I need it?

I had the same email. Bought a 6 pack of Macon Chard. Annoyed that the minimum 6 rule applied when it was less and random bottles they coulnt find.

I grabbed a case of 2018 Fontenil Fronsac @ $14/ea w/shipping. About half of CT avg price, and recently had the '05 which was drinking quite well. 93-94 from Leve, ā€œbest ever produced [at this chateau].ā€ no regrets.

Looked around a little this afternoon and one that caught my attention for $7 is the 2018 Devil’s Playground cab. Vinous gave it a 90 and CT score of 91. Seems like a pretty good deal for a well made red mountain Cabernet. I bought a case of Andrew Januik so probably don’t need it.

I’m not sure I’m a buyer of any of these but worth checking out if looking for value:

2018 Arling Blaze Cabernet Sauvignon Love Needs Courage $7.20
2017 Topel Estate Reserve Cabernet $9
2018 Vista Reserve Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon $9.80
2017 Stephen Ross Zinfandel Dante Dusi Vineyard Zinfandel $8

Thanks for the tip.

Tried to stay away, just took a case each of 2018 and 2019 Portalupi Shake Ridge Barbera. Hard to go wrong with Ann Kraemer’s grapes and good CT scores. Totals me at 4 cases…no more please. How many times do we have to repeat ā€œno more roomā€. These cases will obviously be day drinkers and kept somewhere within living space of house.

I’m actually hoping my UC wine takes a lot longer than they predict for it to arrive and it’s over several months time just so I can drink enough to make space. This is my last UC purchase; I swear on my mother’s eyes.

So call me crazy, but I have now purchased 20 cases of wine in this sale alone, no duplicates. Not all for me, in fact, most of it not for me. I do wine buying for some neighbor friends as they know that I shop the deals and we have similar tastes. However, they don’t know that we are up to 20, I stopped telling them after case #6! I know that 20 will be too much, so I am thinking that I’ll have a tasting and let them (and other wine friends) pick what they want since I have only tasted 2 out of the 20 wines. Open up one bottle of each and sell the remaining bottles at a flat average cost. Should be about $14 a bottle, so steals! I hope it works, or else you all are invited to my house for a party!
