'Under the Radar' Value CdP??

The 05 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Cuvee Exceptionnelle was 35$ and is very nice.

Nice thread Mike. Appreciate all the input here.

Thanks for the reminder Phil - I haven’t had these wines in a long while. Do they still have strong cracked pepper notes in them these days?

Bois du Boursan regular CdP is one of my favorites though it’s probably not so under the radar.

Wow! Thanks for all the help!

I’ve already taken advantage of Premier Cru’s “Special Value Set” for $53 you get one bottle each of '07 Clos St Jean, Cristia and Pierre Usseglio. At an average of $18 a bottle, that seems to be the best deal going.

The Monpertuis Classique also sounds interesting, I’ll keep an eye out for that.

I also like Moulin-Tacussel and have liked Pontifical in the past.

Also I must mention my favorite Southern Rhone wine of all - Marcel Richaud C-D-R-V Cairanne “l’Ebrescade.” Just a fantastic wine and demands bottle age. I still have some '01 but '04, '05 are out there and brilliant. Especially the '05. Naturally made but oh so clean and pure and most importantly stable.

Interesting RE: Cristia as I drink a lot of their CdP’s and have loved every bottle I’ve had although the 05’s need 12 hours in the decanter. When I posted about them on Squeers people who replied hadn’t been able to get hold of many botles in the US of A. Cristia rocks!

KL has this, which is quite nice:

2005 Chante Cigale "Vieilles Vignes" Châteauneuf-du-Pape - SKU 1037613" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They used to have the base CdP from Chante Cigale for $25, which was a great deal.

Also - head over to Costco and try this out:

2007 Kirkland Signature Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de Nalys, France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape - CellarTracker" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The price is right and I certainly can’t say that its a bad wine. However, 07 CdRs are killer deals these days so that’s where I am looking.

Wow that is a great deal. I visited Cristia in March and they are making great wines. Also forgot to mention Chante Cigale. The VV can probably be found for under $40 and is a great wine for those who like Pegau type CdP.

these CdP’s meet your criteria, and I would recommend any of them:

Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (can even be found in Vons/Pavillions stores, sometimes on sale for about $25)

Mas de Boislauzon Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This is the wine you want in 2007.
For the bucks, this is going to be very tough to beat IMHO.

Lots of wonderful 2006’s are coming in at this price.
I have had more than a few bottles of 2006 Clos St Jean VV for that price and under.

Any opinions on Saint-Prefert CdP?? This also seems to be in my price range and getting decent scores from TWA/IWA

I agree with those statements. The '07 is really great–tried it at a tasting at Crush in NYC and thought it was stellar–pre-ordered some right away for $29/bottle.

Here’s a different question for the CdP geeks:

Chateauneuf is far too frequently way over the top for my tastes. I really like Clos du Caillou “Les Quartz” – it is definitely my favorite, by a long shot. To me it has great minerality and retains freshness and avoid jamminess. As far as other wines – I generally like the base cuvees better than the premier cuvees simply because of ripeness. I like Pegau pretty well but some vintages (03, 06 and 07 lately) have pushed the ripeness to a point I dislike (I’ll take 01, 04, 05 please.

So for someone who likes traditionally made wines, terroir expression, and prefers the more elegant side of Chateauneuf, I am curious what people would recommend.

Great call on Charbonniere, if you are lucky you may even be able to locate their cuvees for near $35.
-D

I’ve got a few bottles of the '06 Quartz in my cellar, and I have seen your raving about this wine before. I’ve yet to try one, as I want to wait at least a bit, but perhaps it’s a newer style and can be enjoyed right away…

Hey Todd,

I’ve got some 06 as well but haven’t tasted it yet. I got some closed-out 04 and have drunk three bottles already. It and the 01 are drinking well now… If I see “close-out” pricing on the 06 I’ll get more and try it, otherwise I’m going to sit on my three bottles another 2-3 years probably?

Charvin?

from personal experience: Charbonniere

from what I’ve heard: Charvin

BTW,

K&L currently has the 2006 Mas de Boislauzon on closeout for $24.99. Impossible to go wrong at that price … I’ve had the wine twice, and rated it “90” and “92”, respectively. I bought 4 bottles … less than 2 cases remain. IMO, it will be impossible to find a better CdP at that price.

Caveat: it needs some time … the last time I had a bottle, it was much much much better on Day 3 than Day 1 … the TN is on this board if you run a search for it.
