UK to US shipping services

Hi guys-

Looking to buy some wine from the UK (BBR) ~60 bottles for a combined value of about $7k. They’ve quoted about ~$3k or $50 a bottle for shipping, which seems way too high for me.

Has anyone in the past used a good service to import wine from UK bonded warehouse to the US? The break-even point for me is about $30 a bottle, otherwise it makes sense to just buy it at higher prices in the US.

I know some of the French merchants will ship wine for about $10-20 a bottle, but their prices are that bit higher than the UK in most cases… Wonder why BBR appear to be gouging so much.

Thanks
Ben

Have a chat with GVWM, they have a US arm as well and may be able to help.

Lots of threads on this. Reach out to Connoisseur or Domaine. 5 cases isn’t a ton, but you can definitely do significantly better than $50/bottle.

Yeah Domaine said they weren’t interested and suggested another company to me that would just provide FedEx labels. I asked if it would make a difference if I were a storage customer of theirs, so will see what they say.

I’ve also reached out to Connoisseur, Seabrook and Adventures in Wine and GVWM as Henry has just suggested.

Edit: Domaine will do it for storage customers only, at a rate of $150 / 9L before taxes, fees, and insurance.

I sometimes wonder how BBR manages to stay in business. While their job is to sell wine, helping to facilitate shipping is part of that job. If they feel that strongly, they can say they don’t deal with shipping, and here are some names. What they should not do, is to offer a price which is so ludicrous that it makes them look like morons, and puts a huge question mark over the company.

BTW, I use Connoisseur. Almost all the others are fine, although I did have a nasty experience with Davis Turner.

What Andrew said!!

I believe Domaine charges $125 / case of 12. I am not 100% sure if they can import it if you don’t have a storage account with them.

I don’t.

Today, if you’re shipping by air, all the paperwork and customs included. should be about $360 per case, give or take. 5 cases could be at a discount, I’m not sure.

Try Adventures in Wine ….

If you live on the west coast, I would import for $115–/case to a warehouse in the Bay Area.
The service is via refrigerated ocean container.

Wines in bond? If so, you need a bonded carrier.
