A way to help fund the new health care initiative is to increase taxes on alcohol consumption. This was intentionally not posted in politics, so please keep that out of the discussion.

While I am biased as a non-smoker, I can understand tobacco taxes, as it is unhealthy even in moderation. Alcohol is not the same. While abuse can create health issues, it is not unhealthy im moderate amounts. So I do not like it being taxed to pay for health care because of my use of a non dangerous product.
Of course, I am agnst the whole concept of a “vice” tax.
I was tempted to bring this up in the thread regarding the new MA tax on alcohol, but didn’t want to become overly depressed.
We’re calling it “the other shoe.”
No one said a word when pipe, cigar and cigarette smokers complained. Next its alcohol in all its forms. Then all other food stuffs then just everything you buy. Nothing political but everyone is broke, country, states, counties, cities, etc… And once they tax something it never goes away. If you can make the easy argument against tobacco it isn’t that big of a leap to alcohol. I know non-drinkers who feel exactly the same way as some here do about smokers. There are people who don’t like to shop in my grocery store b/c I sell beer and wine; and they’ve told me that personally.
John not to mention the unstated State and Local taxes in America. ticketing by thousands of Speed cameras and DUI task forces that result in fines to those arrested that exceed the fines for major felonies.
