The 2022s from Hofgut Falkenstein have already been released by MFW Wine Co.
Speaking of the 2022s, RieslingKenner will host its fourth annual Hofgut Falkenstein charity tasting in Chicago on January 14. One can taste the entire lineup of the 2022 vintage. David Schildknecht and I will be in attendance.
Chicago in January? Really? Is the North Pole booked up?
That’s a good one. I didn’t think about that. The Saar can be cold in mid-January, too.
My mother was originally from Chicago and so I used to have a lot of family there. I have been there a lot - spent one summer there working while in Law School and my son went to college there (at Northwestern).
I am a big fan of Chicago and love the city, but NOT in winter.
Speaking of 2022 Falkensteins, I had the 2022 Auslese #5 and it’s really great. Great acidity, salinity and purity of fruit.
Ah, OK, I heard that it can be chilly and windy in winter.
I‘m glad you enjoyed the 2022 Auslese. Förster is a special plot of old vines on the steep slope of Großschock, aka Euchariusberg.
Yes. Although, as I understand it, the city got the nickname “the windy city” because of its politicians and not the weather.
I’m happy to hear that the '22 Auslese #5 turned out well. I bought a couple of bottles after a friend at a dinner was whispering to me about how good it was. I still need to get them delivered, but I’m looking forward to opening a bottle.
You’re right. When I Googled “Windy City,” I read that it goes back to the 1870s. The Cincinnati Enquirer used this term to describe the rival city of Chicago. At the time, both cities were nicknamed Porkopolis.
And, the summer I was in Chicago, my cousins took me for my birthday to this. ESPN story about Disco Demolition - July 12, 1979 - YouTube
Förster ferments and ages in Erich’s favorite Fuder cask each vintage. The 2023 Auslese also comes from this parcel.
Fellow Hoosier (from Indiana) here. Unfortunately, our sources are slim in Indiana. Kahn’s fine wines can speak to their distributors, but you are better off finding someone from a different state that can offer you some. When I purchased Hofgut Falkenstein I went through a place in NC that was recommended to me on these forums, but I do not have a yearly offer for Falkenstein. Like Brian Stotter said, I typically have to go to the east coast to find most wines and often have to pay a bit more. Its tough to be a Oenophile in Indiana.
I have a decent amount of the 2019 Meyer Nepal 11 left. I will bring you a bottle or two when we meet up in Indy sometime.
plug for the charity raffle but this is an easy way to get the entire 2022 Falkenstein lineup :
Very cool @adam_caldwell . I will definitely be doing this, not only for a chance at great wine, but for a good cause.
I searched online and found that Leon & Son still has some 2022s (including Klaus and Mammen) in stock.
If you find Chicago to be intolerable in winter, I heartily suggest you to keep out of Finland in the winter months.
I’ve lived in this icy blizzard hell hole for +35 years and still haven’t gotten used to its winters. Can’t imagine how it is for people from warmer places.
I would not even think about going to Finland in the winter months.
Had a 2019 Falkenstein Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Spätlese #14 tonight. Really good wine. Really good. Great balance between residual sugar and acidity. Fabulous finish. Seemed awfully good right now. But, I am sure like most German wines it will age for a long time. Will it get better? Hard to know.
