Two notes on the '85 Cos d'Estournel from 12/09 and 01/10

  • 1985 Château Cos d’Estournel - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (2/14/2010)
A lovely rich, classically styled Bordeaux, with a touch of richness beyond the “normal” Bordeaux. On the nose, the wine is restrained, with a hint of tobacco and earth. On the palate, the richness fills the mouth, with cigar box, tobacco, and flint. The wine is well rounded and fully mature. It has years left, but waiting will not bring additional complexity, in my opinion. The finish is nice and lasts and lasts. A bit two (rather than three) dimensional; still, quite a lovely wine and thoroughly enjoyable with a lovely porterhouse steak for two. (92 pts.)
  • 1985 Château Cos d’Estournel - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (12/12/2009)
What a beautiful expression of Bordeaux! The wine is fully mature but showing no signs of decline; indeed, it has fully hit its stride. There is a richness to the wine; inviting classic Bordeaux aromas on the nose that just say “come to me.” On the palate the wine was layered with excellent complexity. Got this from auction and it was a lovely bottle and great expression of Bordeaux. If you have one, now’s the time to have one. And it did go beautifully with that bone in ribeye, too. (94 pts.)

Wilfred - thank you for 1) drinking two bottles of this fantastic wine and posting notes, and 2) having both notes posted where they are within months of one another.

This type of post is quite valuable for comparative purposes - not exactly seeing how a wine is developing, as it is likely at a stage where development is minimal over 2 months - but moreover how bottle variation with the same owner of the same bottle in presumably the same conditions can have some variance.
