Two nice Rhones with Sunday dinner

  • 2000 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (9/30/2009)
A winner. This bottle showed so well after being opened for 45 minutes. Almost black in color. Nose of roasted meat, leather, crushed violets, black fruit. Nice spice made a great mouthfeel along with the rounded tannins, fruit, and nice acid balance. This is the best bottle from this lot I’ve had, and I wish I had lots more. Very good.
  • 2004 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (9/30/2009)
Popped and poured. Medium cranberry color, reluctant nose over time showed red and black fruits. Not a mture wine by any stretch, but an exuberant wine that should improve quite a bit in years to come.Good structure and spice might make this into a winner. Good plus.
