2004 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla El Nido - Spain, Murcia, Jumilla (9/28/2009)
15.5% alcohol. Quite possibly the oakiest wine I’ve ever tasted. Decanted for about an hour before drinking. Initially, the nose is just pure dill-laden American oak. Nothing more. Black color. In the mouth, substantial structure and oak. There are gobs of black fruit, and those became more evident as the oak blew off. Strong acidity – it’s likely be acidified because there is a touch of a harsh edge to it. Not overly complex. Long finish that’s smooth from the oak and clamps down with serious tannins. It’s young. It’s international. But if the oak ever resolves fully, I’ll be amazed. B+ -
2004 Bodegas y Viñedos de Murcia Jumilla Pico Madama - Spain, Murcia, Jumilla (9/5/2009)
14.5% alcohol. Pretty generic wine for something that generated so much buzz. Grapey nose with a fair bit of black fruit. Pretty much without structure, but somehow not really flabby in the mouth. Moderate concentration. Short finish with no lingering impression. Boring. On the second day? It was like pure prune juice. Overripe and, frankly, a bit gross. B-
