2004 Château Grand-Pontet - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (12/11/2009)
Had next to the 2004 Mas de l’Abundància
I had this over two days and the first thing I noticed with the first sniff on each days was it smelled reduced. Time lead to more of a earthy scorched aromas. There is a good amount of fruit here but it is wrapped up in leather and earth. The tannin and acid kept things very interesting. Plenty of bright ripe flavors and a lightiish mouth-feel. Seems perfect for mid-term cellaring. (91 pts.)
2004 Mas de l’Abundància Montsant - Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant (12/11/2009)
Gabbed on the closeout for $12. Enjoyable stuff. Had next the 04 Grand-Pontet.
Ripe blackish fruit. Not overly interesting but a solid wine. Ample tannin and acid. Rich and a little chocolaty. On the over-ripe edge with hints of port and even sherry. Not a wine I would want to drink a ton of because of the ripeness but the balance is there and it is tasty. (88 pts.)
