Tuscan-style Chicken Soup & Prime Rib Sandwiches with Icon

Tonight’s lighter supper after last night’s dinner was Tuscan-style chicken soup - light & dark meat chicken, beans, tomatoes, celery, & carrots with garlic and Italian Herbes; with prime rib sandwiches on baguettes with butter, Crême Fraiche-Horseradisn, and mustard. Accompanying wine was a 1997 Ravenswood ‘Icon’ (74% Syrah, 17% Grenache, 9% Mourvedre) - opened an hour before dinner, poured a half hour before; fill less than a cm below the cork; dark, dense ruby in color; rich nose & flavors of spicy dark and red fruit; balanced mid-palate of adequate acidity, rich fruit, & light tannins; and a pleasant medium-long dark fruit finish. It was very enjoyable with the soup and sandwich.

Then for dessert in our den, while watching various TiVo’d shows, was parts of a very over-ripe Comice pear and slices of a Pink Lady apple with grappas - first the Moscato di Poli, followed by Banfi Grappa di Montalcino; then I finished with a couple glasses of the wood-aged Badia a Coltibuono Grappa di Sangiovese. A very nice finish to our light supper.
