Tonight, I am drinking the 2017 Red Newt Cellars Tango Oaks Vineyard (Finger Lakes, NY) Riesling, which I acquired during BD XIV. I do not drink enough New York wine, and I was excited to see a Finger Lakes offering in the Berserkerday craziness.
Most of the Riesling I drink comes from Germany or The Alsace. The interesting thing about Riesling, to me anyway, is how versatile it is. It can be bone dry and bracing, or it can be lush, sweet and seductive, or it can be anywhere else in the continuum. The wine Iām drinking tonight is full-bodied, with some nice, ripe tropical fruit notes and some petrol. If I had to compare it to another Riesling, I would say it reminds me of a J.J. Christoffel Urz-Wurtz in a ripe year ā not a bad thing at all. If you are looking for a ton of acidity, this wine may not be your bag. I am enjoying it for the lively fruit, slightly viscous mouthfeel, and that petrol I love so much. I am a fan.
