Turley closes Amador tasting room

I was originally informed of this by a friend, who heard it from one of the neighboring wineries. I confirmed this with a call to Turley. The website no longer even lists this location.
Apparently (again, secondhand info) it is due to declining business, just not enough traffic.
Saddened to hear this, as I loved visiting there. Also, if a luminary like Turley can’t make a tasting room work, who can? Could be an ominous sign.

The tasting room business is not good

WOW, that sucks. Was just there a couple weekends ago, place looked pretty busy, and no hints of what apparently was to come. Bought some wine to go.

Isn’t their main tasting room in Paso Robles?

Yep, always has been. The other one was the old Renwood one IIRC. And the Paso one is still hopping . . .

Tegan confirmed the tasting room closing, as well as the winery in Plymouth.

Heard yesterday are listing entire Plymouth operation for 6 mil. Used to be the Karly winery, home, and tasting room. Unfortunately Buck and Karly are no longer around. Buck just left us a few months back. Just and fyi…old Renwood location is now Rombauer.

Thanks for the clarification

I was just there maybe 4 weeks ago. It was a nice stop, beautiful facility. Sad to hear this.

In addition to the larger trend for tasting rooms, I’m guessing lesser known / less heralded type wine tasting areas like Amador might be faring relatively worse.

Just a guess though.

For some.

I just was at the Paso one. It was packed.

I haven’t sold a Zin or a PS/Zin in the restaurant for at least 6 months. The last case of Turley I bought took over a year to sell. Even the manager of the local major liquor store says they languish on his shelves. We may as well be selling Anne Green Spring as that style of wine. Its time is gone.

That may be a bit of a dire take…wine on wine lists sells because of the staff selling them rarely due to the name on the list. I have never heard an unsolicitied “hope they have Turley” comment in a restaurant from diners.

Back to the topic of closing tasting rooms and winery, I think it will just be the beginning of a bigger contraction. Lots of wineries got an unusual boost from Covid, but all the years prior wine was down nationally, and while we all said don’t forget 2013-2019 during the Covid consumption years, many did. This left them expanding to fill a temporary business lift in DTC or wholesale business and many out produced their depletion reality and now it is coming to a head.

Hopefully this is just a reset for Turley and right sizing.

There were vineyards (plural) on the drive over to Turley Amador 4 or so weeks back that still had fruit from last year’s harvest rotting on the vine. The picture over there does not look good. I don’t think they had a clue this was coming as they were telling me about new projects there.

I think Paso is the only region still ‘hopping’ for tasting rooms…but I’ll be taking my daughter wine tasting in the SB area in September, so I’ll do my part for your region!

I hear that it is still hopping at the @Frank_Murray_III Champagne crib. :clinking_glasses:

I used to drink Turley back in previous days of my wine life but man, if the alcs are still high, that ship sailed on me. I used to love Turley Hayne Petite, fo sho.

As for Champagne crib, it’s jumping off.

Paso is still busy - though I hear that numbers are down there.

Actually the region that is doing better than most is Temecula - the BID that they passed allowed them to increase marketing budgets and that has helped get more folks there.

Cheers

It may very well be the cost of a tasting. We’ll be there in 11 days and not one fee is over $40.
