Good stuff, last a lot longer than any of the T-oils I’ve purchased. FWIW, there are plenty of places that sell the same salt (without shipping twice a year). I’ve got to remember to back off on the salt as I’m making a dish that I plan on finishing with T-salt… Most times I forget and then skip the T-salt…
I like it best on eggs.
The remnants of what I purchased two years ago are still very frangrant. I’ve found the salt available at local stores, but generally for $5-7 more. Jon has never charge separately for shipping this - they have been shipped underneath bottles in the styro - just be careful you check to ensure you don’t dispose of the salt with the shipper.
It is good stuff but clearly loses its potency. We have a jar we purchased 2 years ago & somebody just gave us another one for Christmas. While the old one still smells like truffles, there is NO comparison. The old one is getting tossed…
don’t believe the hype. amazon sells the same exact product “casina rossa.” I have bottles from both sellers and they are 100% identical. There have been no shelf life advantages to the garagiste product. The only advantage to garagiste is it’s less expensive. Amazon.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I bought two. I had two from last time, and just made an awesome risotto this weekend finished off with the Truffle Salt Really good stuff, and since I don’t have the motivation to go find it locally, makes it really easy to just hit reply on the Garagiste offers.
Speaking of Garagiste food offers, anyone else bitten on his Mustard King of Paris offerings? Have really enjoyed them as well.
I feel the same way about truffle oil, but bit on the stuff offered about a month ago. Stated “to arrive next week” in the offer - it’s been over 3 weeks now and my OARS has not been updated that it’s ready for pick up. I know it’s not going bad in 3 weeks, but what’s the point of local pick up on a product that has a limited shelf life if they deliver on their offer.
I’ve been a little frustrated by their wait times on stuff that’s not supposed to be a long term pre-arrival. This is not the first time I’ve had to wait on something that was supposed to arrive “next week.” … sorry [/rant]
The truffle salt, like many of the Garagiste Italian food products, is imported by Ritrovo. (http://www.ritrovo.com/) They used to have pretty limited distribution and don’t sell directly. (They were really sweet to sell some stuff to me some time ago.) All of their products have been really good or better. They now have a much wider distribution system and their products at a fair amount of online sources.
I like adding the truffle salt in unexpected places like fruit salad or desserts. It gives aromatic notes like a perfumer might use musk which round out the whole.
The Garagiste OARS system is very spottily updated. If you want to know if something is in, just call them. I usually call when I’m heading to Seattle on a business trip and will have more than I expect based on OARS ready for pickup.
I get what you are saying. If it only has a shelf life of a year, you might not want to wait 2 months for it. Whe wines generally would have a bit longer shelf life though right?
I’m fairly new to both Seattle and Garagiste. My orders have been small and on the less expensive side. Yes some emails imply the wine will arrive very soon and it does seem to be a bit longer than that. It also takes quite a bit of time to be billed. I’m not complaining about that part, but it makes it a bit of a reconciliation process at some point. To date i’ve done one pickup. The place was a bit hard to find (tiny sign), and a bit of a dump from the outside. However inside it seemed quite fine and decently managed.
I just checked OARs and it says the truffle salt has arrived. Of course I haven’t been billed yet…
trying to reconcile bills with garagiste is a bit of a joke. my purchases often get lumped together into one charge and shipping charges are haphazard at best. I have stopped purchasing from them with rare exception. I went from 16 cases one year to about 1 case this past year.
Ok, so I just got my stash of truffle and porcini salts in. Any suggestions on the best way to store the unopened ones? Cool dark? Or, does it matter? Just leave it in the pantry until opened.
I put the open containers in the fridge, but I’m not sure it matters.
