Sometimes stars align and sometimes worlds collide. David Bueker was a long time, prolific, and significant presence on WB. He was obviously in a different wine circle than me, but occasionally my developing wine interests intersected with his expansive wine knowledge. From time to time, David’s posts influenced my wine buying/trying. We even exchanged a few PMs, where he was generous with his opinions. Here is one of those wines that I can trace to his influence.
2017 Ramey Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay
Opened this bottle for a coincidental special occasion. It is in the same general energetic, citrus-fruited ballpark as some of my favorite wine leanings, Sancerre and Chablis, but clearly a standout player. From first sip the wine announced, “yes, I am a bit special”. There was a sense of oak at the finish of this wine, but deftly balanced. My wife picked up on the citrus immediately, and searched in vain over a couple of glasses for other elusive but enjoyable taste sensations. Giving up, she summarized instead by exclaiming “this is freakin’ good’”. Agreed. We should be drinking more wine like this.
Thanks, David.
