Toyko or Taiwan with baby?

Family is going to China for a couple of weeks in September and we’re debating about a stop in Japan or Taiwan. Is Toyko a baby friendly city? I’m sure the top sushi restuarants don’t allow babies but is it worth it to stop by?

Air fare prices are about $400 difference between the two places so I’m trying to figure out which location is better for a baby. I want to eat and explore good food places and do some sight seeing.

Thanks in advance!

Don’t think baby factors into the decision… i don’t see a difference in baby treatment/convenience between the two…

Taipei is cool for food, but Tokyo is better for sightseeing, shopping, eating, etc.
If you factor in other Japanese cities such as Kyoto and day trip opportunities out of there (Hiroshima, miyajima, etc), Japan destroys Taiwan if you’ve never been to either…

TAIWANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN. Bring your baby anywhere in Taiwan. You’re gonna be eating street food anyways.

Lol well that’s not an unanimous decision. The street food sure sounds great especially since I can bring my baby along but I’ve always wanted to go to Tokyo. Are the sushi restaurants baby friendly? I’m not talking the Michelin 3 stars but some sushi that’s better than what I can get here.

You can bring babies to sushi places and anything in Japan will be better than what you get in the US. I can think of dozens of conveyor belt style places and even counter places that will be more than happy to have your whole family there.
Tokyo is very baby friendly in my opinion based on having raised two kids here.

I look at it this way, go to either Taiwan or Tokyo with the baby and then come again without the child at some stage in the future. You and your wife will have different experiences at restaurants when you can drink wine and not need to worry about looking after the child.

Both cities offer toms of choices and both are worth a visit as family and as just adults.

Traveling with kids can be a royal PIA, but when they are all grown up and you wish they were kids again you will be glad you did this now.

Have fun and if you need further help feel free to PM.

How old is the baby and which months are you going?
Lately it’s been pretty hot and humid (~95oF and 80% humidity…)

Pretty impossible. a baby? the locals will all scream in horror and judge you endlessly… b/c afterall, no one in Japan’s seen a baby in a restaurant before…

Jokes aside, yes, i eat all types of food in Toyko, sushi included, and even in some of the higher end places, i see parents with infants, toddlers, young kids etc… Of course some common courtesy is needed if the baby is moody and is crying… don’t be one of those “cry it out” parents at that moment (even if you choose to be at home) [cheers.gif]

Lol my daughter will be 10 months old in September. We’ve taken her out many times and she does do well so hopefully she’ll be good in Asia but she’s learning to stand and is teething now. I’m more worried about the plane ride.

Thanks for all the help! I’ll try to pick one over the weekend. Maybe drool over some food blogs from each location haha

I would hate to sit next to you. [snort.gif] On our honeymoon flight to dubai (5th longest direct commercial flight in the world), the “pre-bordering for babies/children” was over 80 deep. I almost cried. Oddly enough, pretty quiet though. Those middle east babies know their place .

Full tummies and warm bodies make babies sleepy. Keep her fed and well wrapped and she will nod a good part of the way.

Did the airplane stock feather dusters?
