Piemonte is covered and it’s not in the same league as some things mentioned here, but you guys inspired me to pick up a bottle of '62 Ferrando Carema Etichetta Nera for the rather reasonable price of $199 at Sommpicks. There are some nice notes on Cellartracker and pricing seems quite fair especially given the market these days.
I might have to pick up a Barolo for myself for next year. The only reasonably priced bottles I’ve found have been a vintage Sherry (PX) that was bottled about 10 year ago.
Think outside the box, literally. I have a friend who was turning 100. Yeah, no real bottles available. So I finessed it by going for something that was from the vintage of the year she turned 21, i.e. legal to drink.
I also brought the wine for a grad school reunion with a vintage from the year we graduated.
Excellent
We were married in 85 and had our daughter in 90.
Both a bit better than 62

'62 Tache is the pinnacle as well as some other bottles of burgundy from '62 for me. I have fond memories of a '62 Laville Haut-Brion Blanc about 5 years ago that was a gift… It was a well stored bottle and ended up being VERY good so there’s gotta be some really nice white bordeaux still out there. CHEERS
I had a half of the 62 Climens back in May. It was drinking great and seemingly indestructible - just as fresh on day 3 as day 1. Will probably still be drinking well in 2062.
Agreed, there are some nice Bordeaux, Latour and Pichon Lalande being the two that I would single out from personal experience, so we’re very much in agreement, Mark!
I also like the 1962 Sauternes/Barsac a lot, which are a bit more elegant and drinkable than the super-concentrated, botrytized 1967s. 1962 is the best Coutet I ever had, for example.
1962 is a brilliant and extremely elegant Burgundy vintage, in both colors, and while it is unlikely to be easy to find, if you happen upon a well-preserved 1962 you will be in for a treat.
A friend and I bought a bottle of '62 La Tâche from a cellar in Dijon last year, and I cannot wait to open it!
If you’re looking for a real monster of a 1962, Vega Sicilia Unico might be the way to go. I think a QdN Nacional was also bottled that year? Never had it, but that wine never dies.
I envy that 62 LT. I traded 12 bottles of Maya for a pristine-looking mag of 62 LT and it was dead. My only experience. Bucket list item.
Ah that is too bad! This particular bottle I happen to know went from the domaine to Dijon, and thence to my cellar in Beaune, so it doesn’t have too many miles on the clock. However, you never know until it’s opened…
Thank you all; I am loving the suggestions.
I’m still going to pick up another 61 for my birthday in Dec and will grab a few more 62s for HRH as soon as she presents me with a prospective guest list for her birthday dinner.
1962 Colheita red and white…
1962 Colheita red and white…
Port? “Colheita” only translates as vintage in Portuguese. It has different specific meanings for Port and for Madeira. It’s nonspecific for table wines.
'62 Doisy Vedrines tonight was fantastic.
I recently sourced some bts of 1962 Niepoort & Ramos Pinto Colheita red port and Dalva white colheita port from Mercearias Torres, specialists in sourcing mature port and Madeira wines [http://web.mtorresnetwine.com/?lang=en]
