Top Chef Season 6 Blog

Kevin Gillespie of Woodfire Grill in Atlanta came out smoking…he deserves it.
The restaurant is killing since he took over.
Only 26, too.
Think he may stick around a few weeks.

I wish she would a little closer to me … flirtysmile

So that’s why you don’t like Padma. You prefer Yoni’s backside. [mouth-drop.gif] [berserker.gif]

Oh and also, a big [middle-finger.gif] to you.

Now you want mine? Sorry, Jorge, I don’t swing that way. Not that there’s anything wrong with it. neener [berserker.gif]

Although it was another one of Top Chef’s famous catering episodes, I liked the idea behind this one. Almost all around it looked like some decent food was made with what they were given. The two brothers are really shining so far, along with Jennifer who is a combination of good, tough and not to mention the only cute girl.

Preety (sp?) deserved to go home as she is pretty much useless, but I’m fine if that cat Michael goes home as well. He’s a douche and I really can’t stand him. When he was explaining what a risotto is, he was speaking down to the whole audience and I wanted to strangle him.

Yeah, that guy does seem like a douche, but there is no way he should have gone home last night. I totally think the judges made the right call. If he hadn’t made that second throw-away dish, he would have never even been at judges table. When will these people learn? Have they never seen the show before? Not only is it far better to make one good dish than two mediocre ones. It is also far better to make one good dish than one good dish and one mediocre one…even though the latter is more work and produces just as many good dishes at the former, it will always be a worse result for the contestant. deadhorse

I would be a quite happy fellow if her sucking was upon me. flirtysmile flirtysmile

The other lesson some of the cheftestants never seem to get is to name your dish very generally. If you call a dish xyz ceviche, some judge will try to vote you off because “it may have been a good xyz dish, but it wasn’t really ceviche…does even know what ceviche is?” On the other hand, if you just called the dish xyz, it seems that the same judge would be likely to say “I really like this xyz, and it really reminded me of ceviche.” neener

Dennis,

I agree.

All three of the guys from ATL are great.
Kevin. He is flexible and can execute like nobodies business.
Eli. I went to his restaurant, Eno, last week and we let him cook. He has major chops. 24 years old!
Hector is also very talented. Unfortunately he is stylistically very narrow. Great chef however.

The girls are weak except the chick who was at Le Bernadin. She has major chops

Should be pretty interesting.

Don,

I believe she is/was at another Ripert restaurant (maybe in Philadelphia), not Bernardin. I concur though, except for her, the women this season are quite weak.

Jorge,
She is in charge of one of Ripert’s restaurants in Philly.
She used to be a sous chef at Bernardin. That might be a reason you won’t see Ripert this season.

whew!! I finally read this therad again since I caught-up on this season last night. I’m kind of surprised to see people’s remarks about the contestants being weak: I think this is the strongest group they’ve put together for quite some time … maybe since Season 2? I agree the women appear weak, with the exception of Jennifer - who I think is one of the favorites, thus far (although, my gawd!, does she ever have some arrogance about her!). The men, on the other hand, have quite a few talents representing: the Michael and Bryan brothers; Kevin; Eli; Matin. I don’t think Hector’s going to stick around for very long, and we haven’t seen much from Ash. I agree that douchebag Michael should be sent packing, but his ‘tude will probably keep him in good favor with the producers, and thus on the show longer than his skills merit. So far, I really see this as a battle between Kevin, Jennifer, Michael V., and Bryan V. It’ll be interesting to see how things continue to develop.

Jennifer will win. Douchebag Mike should be a Hell’s Kitchen contestant.

I tend to agree with this … after all, when you are Eric Ripert’s sous chef, that makes you what?, like the 8th best chef in the world!?!

Ramsey would spit him out like spoiled milk. Jennifer is odds on favorite at this point. Al though i would like to see the brothers battle for the title.

Jennifer is no-nonsense, professional, badass, clearly talented. However, before we hand her the trophy I would like to see her cook something other than seafood. I think the closest she has come to a land animal out of 5 dishes cooked was a little duck fat added to one quickfire dish.

My thoughts exactly. I still think she’s one of the top one or two to beat, though.

Clearly.

Jennifer is awesome. By far the contestant I would would want most to cook for me, though the Atlanta boys are 2,3 in my opinion for Southern and bbq. Looks like it should be a really good season, especially when it gets down to the last 6 or 7.

Good episode last night. What an amazing collection of chefs in one dining room. To be honest, I kindah think Kevin would’ve preferred cooking for them instead of dining with them, as nerve racking as that would be. Quite an honor to have them eat your food.

Mercifully, Jesse was sent packing as was Hector. Jesse just really didn’t seem to know how to cook while Hector was just unrefined and perhaps best left to cook in the barrio.

Mike is a big talker with nothing really to back it up. Bryan totally carried him this past episode by telling him how to make the sauce and the other Voltaggio carried him to the winner’s circle last week. It was hilarious that the judges then put him in with the other losers when they found out he had nothing to do with the winning dish, but was responsible for that awful shrimp salad.

Ashley, Ron, Robin and Laurine are all on borrowed time. It seems clear that Jennifer, the Voltaggio brothers and Kevin are head of the class. Either of them can take it. Just a real strong group of candidates this year, though with the exception of Jennifer, a real weak group of female chefs.
