SUNDAY NIGHT WINES AND PIZZA - Andy Velebil’s Pad (3/8/2009)
A few friends for wine and pizza. All 4 wines showed very well. We aren’t counting the California Port among the “wines” though. Andy tested us with the late bottled Port from a not very heralded vintage. Was very good as it turns out for a pretty good price I gather and even seems really young.

1984 Kathryn Kennedy Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains
Nose shows some signs of its age with truffley oxidized notes among its cedary goodness. Very nice balance and in a great spot. Not a ton of power or complexity but just a perfect drinking aged Cab. Very nice. -
1994 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley
Initially the nose doesn’t give up much but comes on later with some dark cassis and cedar. Palate seems to carry lots of fruit with the weightiest mouth feel I’ve had on a Forman. Start and finish seem to lack a bit. I think this needs more time or a coupe hours in the decanter right now. Still very good. -
2005 Ridge Geyserville - USA, California, Sonoma County
Big brambly nose of smashed dark berries. Lots of berry fruits but in balance with some acidic back bone. Zin done right as so few producers do. -
1979 Warre Porto Late Bottled Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Served blind. Big nose showing some sweet maple, light baking spice with charcoal and orange rind notes. Big palate with plenty of fruit. Brightly fruited for a Port yet not fleshy and well balanced with nice citrus notes. Bit short but this still seems young to me. Very good and not entirely typical of Ports to me but it is a late bottled vintage example. -
N.V. Meyer Family Meyer Family Port - USA, California
Nose of baked and stewed plums. Sweet confectionery with not very pleasant flavors of overripe fruit. Pretty far from “Port” or Zinfandel for that matter.
