TNs: Two New Ones From Rippon

Rippon Vineyard Riesling 2008:
A good, fresh nose, full of tropical fruits (guava!) and grapefruit rind. The wine is viscous and loaded with mineral content, but what stands out is the stone fruit- peaches just leap out of the glass for example. Surrounding the excellent core of fruit, and good acidity, are bits of pithy tropical fruits- more guava and some mango. Really a delightful and refreshing wine. 90 points

Rippon Vineyard Pinot Noir Central Otago 2007:
Red/purple flowers, spiced white chocolate and intense red cherries lead the aromatic party. Not as much root/cola flavors as I have noted on previous vintages. Bright cherries, mocha and some pine resin are all present. This is a young beauty that deserves time. It will be interesting to see how this develops. 92 points

Great news John, thanks for the notes. I really like Nick’s wines and have yet to pick up any 2007 Pinot.

John, do you know how the '06 Pinot is drinking now? I have two bottles of it that I’ll be popping with Dr. Pepper-braised pork shoulder next weekend. It’ll be my first experience with Rippon, so hopefully everyone will like it.

Bill,

I’ve had it several times. I would recommend not opening it if you can. They need several years yet to settle down IMO.

I know that Phil and Carey have visited the Central Otago…as did my wife, Claire and I…

and IMO, they are producing some of the nicest, most interesting, QPR Pinots that are around

I’ve only had the '06 a few times but I haven’t had it recently. I have been messing around with the '04.

Thanks, guys. Guess I’ll look for for another pinot to pull out of inventory. Appreciate the advice!
