TNs: Two excellent Chards (Beringer, Selyem)

  • 2005 Williams Selyem Chardonnay Allen Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (1/31/2010)
14.8% alcohol. Rocking bottle of this. Initially, plenty of oak on the nose. That blew off with some air. And left behind was a terrific, big-style of Chardonnay. Nose of apple, lemon oil, and minerals. In the mouth, rich and concentrated but with a really good linear sensibility on the palate. Bursting forth with fruit, minerals, and solid acidity. Long finish that has a slightly buttered popcorn note. A-/A
  • 2007 Beringer Vineyards Chardonnay Private Reserve - USA, California, Napa Valley (1/21/2010)
14.5% alcohol. Lovely Chardonnay. Light yellow color. Nose of green apple, pear, a touch of oak, and some citrus notes. In the mouth, beautifully pure and delineated, with terrific fruit that is expressive without being rounded or flabby at all. A nice steely backbone of acidity and minerality to this wine. Long finish. Very well done. A-
