TNs: Three very different Swan wines

This was the second bottle of 05 Mancini Ranch … first one was badly corked. Such a shame. Both 06s were atypically ripe.

  • 2005 Joseph Swan Vineyards Zinfandel Mancini Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (12/2/2009)
13.9% alcohol. Not corked. And such a difference. This is so youthful and tight, but it’s awfully tasty. Cherry and spicy black fruit deliver on the nose and palate. There’s a racy style about this wine, as in most vintages from Mancini Ranch. Pure, elegant, and full of fruit, with a spicy/peppery note surrounding the ample acidity. Really lovely finishes that delivers the fruit with great purity. A-
  • 2005 Joseph Swan Vineyards Zinfandel Lone Redwood - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (11/27/2009)
16.4% alcohol. Wow, this reminds me of the 2003 Zeigler Zinfandel, but not quite as sweet. Big, rich nose of jammy black fruit and some spice. In the mouth, initially a terrific cherry jam profile, but as the bottle wears on, it gets a bit too syrupy. This is superripe. Well done, but just over the top. B+
  • 2006 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Great Oak Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (11/27/2009)
15.0% alcohol. Very light red color. Aromatic nose of ripe blackberry and cherry, along with spice. A striking contrast to the 2004. This is ripe and drinking smoothly right now. Rich fruit in the mouth, yet retains bright acidity. Solid finish showing a bit of heat. Definitely for earlier term consumption. B+
