TNs: Three excellent 2006 PNs (Siduri, A.P. Vin, Kutch)

The Siduri Garys’ was showing superbly. As much as I love the 2005 from Adam, this might be my favorite Garys’ he’s done. The 2005-2007 period will be interesting to compare.

  • 2006 Siduri Pinot Noir Garys’ Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (10/27/2009)
14.1% alcohol. This is a gorgeous Garys’. Solid red color. Beautiful nose, full of black cherry, blackberry, flowers, damp earth, and minerals. In the mouth, voluptuous but weightless, with expansive swaths of fruit covering the tongue and supported by impressive layers of complexity. Bright acidity. Exceptional finish that brings together all the elements of the wine. A-/A
  • 2006 A.P. Vin Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (10/25/2009)
14.9% alcohol. Classic Keefer here that is drinking very well. A picture of the vintage, with a light cherry color that lightens to clear at the rim of the glass. Aromatic nose of black cherry, baking spices, and floral notes. In the mouth, rich and sappy, but retaining focus and balance that allows the wine to remain refreshing. Excellent acidity and a long finish. The oak has integrated. It’s lovely now. A-
  • 2006 Kutch Pinot Noir Russian River Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (10/24/2009)
14.4% alcohol. This is peaking and screaming good. Pretty cherry color. Gorgeous bouquet of black cherry, blackberry, earth, spice, and a hint of minerals. In the mouth, velvety and smooth. A slightly sweet edge to the fruit, which is viscous and lovely in the mouth. Smooth all the way across the tongue, with a juicy finish. Eminently drinkable and just very pretty. This has rounded out nicely. A-

Thanks for the notes, Tom. I haven’t really begun digging into my 2006s yet. Based on these examples, it sounds like starting might be wise. Given your druthers, would you sit on these a bit longer?

Thanks, Jeff. The Siduri Garys’ definitely has positive life ahead of it. I felt like the A.P. Vin was drinking well right now, and it’s possible the Kutch may be peaking the earliest of them all. I’m starting to dig into 2006 because I’ve decided that I’ll go with them now as a first choice while 2005 and 2007 continue to age … So I may not be doing full justice to each of their aging potential. That said, however, the 2006s I’ve been drinking recently have shown to be quite approachable this early.
