TNs: Regusci 2004 cab, Alpha O 2005 cab, Seasmoke 06 Southing, Shirvington 04 shiraz

Regusci 04 cab was very good. Complete nose with cranberries, bramble and reaspberries as well as some baking spices. The palate was medium and a little tart but the fruit was well delineated. Medium finish.

Alpha Omega 2005 cab. This was young from the nose to the finish. Darker fruit, tighter nose. Air didnt do much to open it up. The fruit was pleasant tasting and it had a lot of stuffing but never really blossomed in 3 hours. Chewy at times.

Seasmoke southing 06 from mag. Usual gushing Seasmoke nose of cherries, smoke and sweet spices. Palate was medium to full with that Seasmoke sweetness I like. Nice finish, nothing off balance today.

Shirvington 04 had a big blueberry nose with some pepper and a little funk that was surprising. Full bodied, crisper and cleaner than I imagined. Almost no glycerin feel. While these characteristics were surprising, the wine was simple in its flavor profile. Nothing to think about just a big blueberry stick. Eh…pleasant glad I dont own any though.

Red Nectar shiraz 04 See Shirvington note and add more black pepper to the recipe. Glad I only have one left.

Great notes thanks.

I believe that the blueberry notes for the sryahs come primarily from one particular yeast that is very popular right now amoung wine makers. It also does seem to produce the monolithic flavors you describe.

Not a big Seasmoke fan, in that I don’t love all that sweetness, but it is a good wine. Seems the 06s are drinking better right now than the 05s and even the 04s, which both need more bottle time, imo.

I dont mind the blueberry but I do mind monolithic. I find blueberry notes in cali syrah for example but theres always some beef, charred notes, herbs or something like that adding complexity. Didnt even get oak in them. I wasnt aware that the yeast strain made that kind of a difference. Thanks!

As for Seasmoke, Im a huge fan. Poppy is always saying to let them rest several years but I like them on the young side because I actually enjoy the sweetness and a little heat doesnt bother me. You are right, though, that the 06 are drinking better (especially pop and pour) than the 05 or 04 at least to my palate, though if I have 6 hours to prepare Ill air out an 05 southing which remains one of my favorite pinots to date.

Are we talking wine or your girlfriends?
