TN's: Park 75 DRC Dinner

Several of us got together to share some wine from Domaine Romanee Conti and eat some great food. A really fun evening.
Michael Bowden did a great job in Food and Wine of presenting the pictures of the wine and food.

Here are a few notes.

Champagne

1988 Krug

Just magical. A mix of brioche, citrus and intense minerality. The palate is focused. The finish goes on forever. Profound.

1993 Saint Chamant Cuvee Royale Blanc de Blancs

A nose of hazelnuts, caramel and citrus type fruit. The palate is wonderfully fresh and vibrant. Lots of spicy complexity. Terrific finish.

Domaine Romanee Conti’s

1999 Montrachet

A nose of intense white fruit. Flowers. An exotic spicy component. With time this keeps expanding and presenting layer upon layer of different elements. The palate is at once unctuous and extremely fresh in the mouth. Incredible ending complexitiy. Profound. Just as good as you could hope.

1998 Romanee-St-Vivant
An exotic nose. Red fruit, asian spice and some element of truffle. The palate is a little muddled. There is terrific fruit and good finishing complexity but not the freshness you would hope. The tannins intrude also on the finish shortening it. Still a very good experience.

2000 Romanee-St-Vivant

A vibrant young nose. Exotic again with asian spice. Here the palate is supported by the tannin which freshens the wine in your mouth. A very long finish. Excellent!

1978 Grands Echezeaux
A soaring penetrating red fruit nose. Tons of complexity and asian spice. Every sips shows finesse and a new layer of complexity. Fresh and incredible. Profound.

1990 Grands Echezeaux
Young somewhat dark fruit here. Brooding on the nose and palate at first.
This expands with time. There is asian spice and tons of extract here. A really special length. Very young and just beginning to drink to me. Profound in the future.

1988 La Tache

An incredible nose. Some penetrating darker fruit. Bacon fat. Asian spice. Some floral note. The palate doesn’t keep up with the nose however. It is still somewhat contricted by the tannin. Never takes off. I liked the wine however.

1969 La Tache
Incredible complexity on the nose and palate. Delicate at this point in life. You have to concentrate here to hear the siren song. If you do, it is there. A complex mix of dark fruit, bacon fat, asian spice and some element that is floral again. Here it is presented in a very feminine package. I loved it.

A great night for me. Not often you get to explore wines like these.
Thanks to Michael for being the sommelier.

Hello Don,

As I read your notes the air around me was turning green due to my jealousy. Sounds a totally fascinating tasting, thanks for sharing.

Cheers,
David.

Thanks for sharing your notes. Must have been a wonderful evening!

I have had 69 Romanée-Conti, which had not aged particularly well, nor was it especially memorable.
Perhaps it was the bottle?
That is why it was interesting to see that you had a good opinion of La Tâche from the same vintage.

Alex R.

Alex,
It was a perfect fill that probably allowed this wine to show anything.
It is very feminine and definately fading.

Don,

Nice line-up and notes. I’ve never heard of the Saint Chamant until the other day. Not a bad showing considering the vintage and tough placement of following up '88 Krug.

Glad your '69 La Tache was a better showing than the norm. Most '69 La Tache, DRC’s and Red Burgs in general are past their peak.
