TNs: Odds and ends (Hitching Post, Gary Farrell, Rochioli, Novy)

  • 2006 Hartley-Ostini Hitching Post Pinot Noir Rio Vista Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Rita Hills - Sta. Rita Hills (12/14/2009)
14.5% alcohol. Opened two hours before drinking but not decanted. Black cherry color. Somewhat muted nose of black cherry, minerals, and flowers. In the mouth, racy and refreshing, with pure and slightly tart cherry fruit. Bright acidity. An earthy, complex edge creeps up before the finish. Slight heat at the back end is a nit, but this is quite pleasant. B+
  • 2007 Gary Farrell Chardonnay Westside Farms Russian River Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (12/13/2009)
14.3% alcohol. Somewhat on the simple side. Solid yellow color, not too dark. Apple, pear, and oak on the nose. In the mouth, the same apple and pear fruit comes off slightly flat, but it’s perked up by a mineral streak. Oak carries the finish on longer than the fruit probably would on its own. B+
  • 2008 J. Rochioli Sauvignon Blanc Estate Grown - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (12/11/2009)
14.5% alcohol. Light greenish yellow color. Terrific bouquet of grapefruit, grass, and minerals. In the mouth, more on the plush side in this vintage, with a more rounded mouth feel but excellent purity of citrus fruit. Plenty of minerality and grassy notes, although the grass isn’t that pronounced, which is a good thing. Refined acidity. Solid finish. Drinking perfectly. A-
  • 2007 Novy Family Wines Zinfandel Russian River Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (11/26/2009)
15.1% alcohol. Really tasty, fruit bomb of a Zin. Briary nose of black fruit. Ripe in the mouth, with jammy black fruit, just enough acidity, and a strong finish. Took on a touch of port-like notes on the nose as it stayed open. Short-term consumption but delightful for it. B+/A-
