TNs NV Jean Laurent Brut Rose and NV J Vineyard Brut Rose--one excellent, one poor

Well the J and the JL were served blind to a small group of semi-experienced sparkler lovers and the result was unanimous: the J is by far the superior sparkler and averaged 90 points, while JL only averaged 82 points.

I expected those results as I had the 2 bubblies the past few days.

The JL has a disgorgement date of Sept. 2008. $32.99 at D&M seemed like a good price. Tasted like a lighter Aussie sparkling red, just a mess, no elegance.

The J is the bargain at @ $18.95 at SDWC. Classy sparkler with delicate fruit and yeast.

Otto,

Shame about the Jean Laurent. The Rose has historically been variable and never a classical, elegant one, but I don’t think it should have performed as bad as it sounded - no clue if you don’t like the style or if it was a variable bottle. The JL vintage Rose is almost a red wine with bubbles and is a wine for those who want power and is an eye opener for those who normally don’t like Rose Champagne.

J makes a nice set of wines. I tend to think they fall apart a little with warmth, but they are tasty with a chill on them. The best part of the tasting is that you found a reasonably priced sparkler that it seems you really enjoy.
