Not the best weekend for wines, but at least the Brogan was a winner.
2003 Waterstone Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley, CA)
Alc. 14.5%. I bought a half case of these several years ago and not one of them has impressed me. This particular bottle was hot (strong alcohol) and extremely disjointed. At $20 and with all of the seemingly sound reviews (marketing), I thought this would be a solid QPR, but in my experience it’s just a lot of hype.
2006 Brogan Cellars Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (Sonoma County, CA)
Alc 14.1%. I opened one a few months ago that was tasty and this bottle was even better. Pungent nose of baking spice, blood orange, black cherries and some toasted oak. Medium-bodied with round tannins that coat the entire palate finishing long and silky smooth. Delicious.
2007 Dominio de Eguren Vino de la Tierra de Castilla Codice (Castilla-La Mancha, Spain)
Alc 13.5%. I bought a variety of wines over the weekend to try out as daily drinker, QPRs (under $12) and this bottle was recommended to me by the wine shop. Unfortunately, it was plagued by an overpowering presence of VA that I could not get past. I have a few more bottles that I’ll either return or open and hope they’re OK.
