TNs--Mike (and Jay) on Mini-Tour--Pizza Lunch with Andrew Klug; Ruinart, Produttori, Venge

We finished our Atlanta debauchery with lunch with Andrew Klug, someone I’ve wanted to sit down with one-on-one (or one-on-two in this case) and spend some time with. It was a distinct pleasure and we ate some of the best pizzas we’ve had, at Antico Pizza in the ballpark complex. Andrew brought 2 wines and I toted one along. I didn’t take detailed notes this time, so these will be impressions.

2002 Ruinart Rose

Andrew had given this a little air and it helped shape the wine very nicely. bright and almost curvy red berry and pomegranate fruit for me, there is just enough cut to give it some lines. It dances well on the tongue, really a great choice for pizzas outdoors—and probably fits with a lot of other food too. If you want a Rose that concentrates on delivery of pleasure, look no further.

2019 Venge Scout’s Honor Zin

I haven’t had a Venge in some years. This checked in at 15.3%. While the fruit is undeniably on the rich and ripe side–blackberries, plums and boysenberry–it also has that just-enough control not to be out of control. Good match with the pizzas as well.

2016 Produttori di Barbaresco Pori

I haven’t had any 16s from the cooperative, very glad to try. I think Andrew gave this about 2 hours’ air, but he can correct. For me there was a rather unusual–though good—meaty and/or mustardy side to the palate, but this just added interest for me to mostly red-centred fruit. It needs a long, long time to come into full focus, but seems to be off to a good start, perhaps no surprise.

Andrew, big thanks for meeting with us and capping off a great 4 days here.

Mike

I agree the DR Rose was great with the white pizza. The PdB I actually opened the night before, double decanted and into the fridge. I was going to possibly decant again in the morning before lunch but it was showing well on the nose so I left it. I think it had plenty of air to show nicely with the red pizza with Calabrian peppers, but definitely needs more time to evolve.
