From dinner the other night; Napa Valley CS, served blind and in following order . . .
2007 Spottswood: led from wire to wire; the class of the field; a nearly perfect CS; mine and the group’s WOTN; nose of tobacco and cedar; the palate is replete with sweet purple, blue and black fruit; finishes strong with notes of black licorice; this set a pace that could not be matched on this night; a youngster with so much life ahead, although if I had any in my cellar, it would extremely difficult to keep my hands off . . . 2008 Karl Lawrence, Herb Lamb: on any other night, this could have been WOTN (1 vote this night); rich sweet concentrated black fruit; no rough edges; long finish; very nice drink 2005 Dominus: bricking on the edges; the fruit takes a back seat to the exotic spices and cinnamon; I liked this more than the rest of the group 2006 Myriad Spring Mountain: ultra-smooth and plush; hedonistic 2007 Outpost True Vineyard: lush boysenberry elixir; velvety smooth, soft and pretty 2006 Schrader George III: pushes the limits of ripeness and concentration; needs time to resolve 1999 Harlan: mine and the group’s second WOTN; peppery black fruit; plenty of structure; maturing very nicely (2 votes for WOTN) 2007 Louis Martini Monte Rosso: blackberries, dark fruit and notes of tar make for a nice entry, however, unfortunately, the etoh is peeking through and it is hot on the finish 2006 Tamber Bey Deux Chavaux; sweet rich dark red fruit abounds; creamy; delicious; easily the QPR of the night (think this was released at $36; finished my 6-pack years ago); Mike Smith delivers yet another winner 1997 Montelena: corked and flawed
Great to see you Gary; thanks for coming up.
As always, thanks to everyone for their incredible generosity and friendship.
Nice notes, Henry. Love the 2007 Spottswoode. You are right, it is difficult to keep those in the cellar. They may never shut down. Too bad about the 1997 Montelena. I have always had good luck with the 1997 Montelena Estate; not as much luck with the 2001 Montelena Estate.
Interesting on the 06 Myriad. That bad boy was tight and angular the first couple years from release. I had wondered how it would evolve - wish I had the space to keep these kinds of wines around longer.
