I owe a lot of notes from this weekend but figured I’d finish this set while they’re fresh in my mind.
Lovely late lunch with the Stewarts, @Nick_Christie and Eileen. We had some Katz’s pastrami, brisket, and turkey along with some veal cutlets and mushrooms that paired nicely with the burgs.
Krug Grande Cuvee 168eme
Lemon curd and some brioche on the nose, with nice energy and acidity on the palate. Perhaps not quite as crisp as the bottle we had last year, but still a great drink.
2005 Truchot-Martin Morey St Denis 1er Les Blanchards
Hint of VA or brett that blew off after a few minutes in the glass. Explosive aromatics with violets, sous bois, and cherries. The palate was light in weight with delicate filigreed texture, soft structure, and more beautiful fruit. The finish was pretty, but not the longest. This was a lovely exotic wine which was a pleasure to drink.
2008 Rousseau Clos de Ruchottes
Lovely aromatics with dark plum and red cherry fruit, as well as some earth. The palate was dense and took quite awhile to open up, with some structure and a deep acidic core. Texture was beautiful and the finish was long. I think like some other 2008s this needs more time.
2005 Truchot-Martin Clos de la Roche
Beautiful aromatics that exploded from the glass; initially it almost felt like there was a bit of whole cluster but it may have just been some funk that blew off immediately, leaving ripe cherry fruit and dark earth. Texture was just as beautiful as the Blanchards, with more depth, power, and energy and similar elegance. Finish was long and lovely. Just a glorious wine, which I figured would be WOTN, but…
2010 Rousseau Clos de la Roche
Wowzers aromatics with red currants, deep dark loam, and chantilly crème, yielding a beautiful palate with incredible power and depth, elegant texture, crisp acidity and balance, and a scintillating finish. Just a showstopping complete wine that was singing from start to finish. Beautiful showing.
What a great flight of wines today!
