TNs - Enfield tasting with John Lockwood / Arnot-Roberts Whites / Jolie Laide Pick-Up

I picked up my Enfield and Arnot-Roberts wines over the weekend. John was setting up for pick-up day and tasted me through a few wines before others arrived. Chicken scratch notes but hopefully helpful.

2021 Citrine Chardonnay - Citrussy nose, grapefruit/lemon, pithy, turns green apple, nice balance.
2020 Haynes Vyd Chardonnay - Tart, lean and mean, saline, full ml, turns creamy on the back end
2020 Watson Chardonnay - Fuller and creamier up front than the Haynes. Green apple
2018 XB 06 Sans Ouillage Chardonnay - Experimental Batch. This is a barrel of 2018 Citrine that underwent full ml, was racked and put back into the barrel. John then hard bunged it and set it aside untouched for 3 years before bottling. Darker color, nutty nose, almond, hint of caramel, expansive palate, great acidity, wonderful balance full win! This was exceptional.
2020 Jurassic Park Chenin Blanc - Chamomile on the nose, oily up front, flinty, slightly reductive, vanilla, maybe some sweet coconut, moderate acidity.
2020 Brosseau Grenache - Light color, strawberry, watermelon? blackberry mix, nice tannic structure. Lay it down for a few years.
2021 Pretty Horses Red Blend - Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano - Blackberry core, heavy tannins, light texture, food friendly/dependant.
2019 Waterhorse Ridge Cab Sauv - Medium bodied, black currant, balckberry, cedar, lean and mean. Give it air.

After Enfield I drove up to Healdsburg to pick-up Arnot-Roberts. It was very crowded despite them breaking the party up into ticketed time slots. Was like a public tasting event where people crowded tables and spent inordinate amounts of time chit chatting with the pourer and not allowing space for others to get a pour or reach the dump bucket. i made it through the whites and one red before bailing. Standing around with a mouthful of wine that you have no place to spit is not my idea of fun. Being popular has its downside I guess.

2021 Dry Creek Falanghina - Slight nose, very light bright tangy citrus, kinda just there, poolside pounder. Was hoping for more out of this. Maybe some air and room temp will help coax something out.
2021 Randall Hill Vyd Sauv Blanc - One word note “Winner!” I loved this wine
2021 Watson Chardonnay - Similar take to the Enfield, good weight up front, creamy, light, bright mid palate, lemon curd, vanilla wafer.
2021 Trout Gulch Chardonay - Another very shy nose, that ends on the palate though, tart lemon lime, mineral streak, bracing acidity very nice crushed stones on the finish
2021 Sanford Benedict Chardonnay - no note, was getting frustrated

Afterwards I went to the Jolie-Laide pick-up where Scott tasted us through Melon de Bourgogne, Sauvignon Gris, Enz Cab Pfeffer, Chalone Grenache and North Coast Syrah Halcon/Hawkes Butte (last dip into Halcon)
These wines all performed very well. I really like Scotts winemaking approach using a bit of carbonic to really magnify the fruit aromas and brightness. I buy multiple cases of his wines each year. Spent the time chatting with Scott, Tom Debiase and another gentleman so I didn’t take any notes.

Overall I thought the Enfield wines were great. Johns wine always impress, especially the Chardonnays which are some of my favorite white wines coming out of California. Many thanks for taking some time before his guests arrived to pour me one-on-one. Arnot-Roberts, the wines are getting leaner and leaner with a couple of the white wines really lacking on the palate. I’ll give them their just due but only the Sauv Blanc and Trout Gulch moved the needle.

Hey Brian, what does “hard bunged” mean/entail?

It wasn’t a bung you would put in a barrel that may still have some residual fermentation going on that would vent gasses out nor let anything in. The barrel was topped to overflow and bunged tight.

Thanks for al the notes. John Lockwood makes really interesting and delicious wines. So glad that Doug Wilder clued me in on them back when the 2010 Syrah first came out.

A-R is a winery that I ultimately backed away from as the wines became zero fun to drink. Sad, as I initially loved what they were doing, but then they went way too far for my tastes. It’s an issue I have had with several producers (Pax 2.0, much of Matthiasson, etc.), but there’s always other stuff to drink.

Yeah, the last A/R release I bought from was like 2012. Then I skipped a release or two and the emails stopped coming. This past release I got an email offer and figured I’d take a flyer. Here comes that nasty acronym, the “QPR” just isn’t there for me any longer.

Enfield on the other hand… $34 for the Citrine XB 06 is a ridiculous value.

Thanks for the Enfield notes. I own more of John’s wines than any other and it’s for good reason. Opened a 2013 Heron Lake chard last week and it was just a great bottle of Burgundian chardonnay. When you think that it was only $35 it’s just stupid.

Finally met @Brian_Tuite who lives in a neighboring town. Could not make the new cellar party this summer so it was nice to chat with Brian about Jolie Laide and other area wineries. Also, like Brian did not have time to take notes but as usual the Jolie Laide wines continue to be some of the very best coming out of California.
We all often use the word balance but in the case of Jolie Laide it truly fits. My favorites were the 2021 Trousseau Gris (Sonoma County), 2021 Red Wine (Trousseau Noir, Cabernet Pfeffer, Valdiguie and Gamay), 2020 Grenache (Chalone) and 2020 Syrah North Coast (blend of Halcon and Hawks Butte)
Added bonus is the above wines range from $30.00 to $36:00 making them affordable.

If you get a chance to talk to Scott Schultz, owner-winemaker of Jolie Laide, do it. Scott is very engaging on all things wines and vineyards. Like other producers he has dealt with fires, frosts etc. but he also is strict on farming practices and has observed what climate change has meant to some of California’s vineyards. His honesty about wine, vineyards and winemaking is a refreshing change from the hyped up vintage and vineyard talk you often hear.

Also wanted to mention that the pick up party was held at Little Saint, a new plant based restaurant in the space where The Shed was. Attractive space and very nice array of food to pair with the wines being served. We are mostly carnivores but will certainly give Little Saint a try for lunch or dinner based on what we had.

Great notes, Rat, you can chicken-scratch for me anytime! Haven’t really taken heed of A-Rs SB before, you make it sound beguiling. The XB Chard sounds special.

Cheers,

Mike

I love John’s/Enfield’s wines. Almost always punches well above their weight. The Waterhorse Ridge Cab is probably right alongside my CA favorite (Ceritas). Great cab.

A-R is often a bit too lean even for an acid hound like myself. But I do like their Chardonnays a lot. I forget which one is my favorite now, but I think it’s the Watson Ranch bottling.

Never had Jolie-Ladie, but they come up all the time, so need to change that. And I love Cab Pfeffer, which I didn’t know they made!

I’m giving Arnot-Roberts the benefit of the doubt on this. It was a cool rainy day, the wines were cold and the crowds, due to the rain pushing everyone inside, messed with me. I have 2 bottles if the Falanghina so I’ll pop one the next tine we have a warm day and see what it offers up at a different serving temp.

Back in Napa around 2009, Tom DeBaise was the Somm at Press…he was doing it as he got his wine business rolling…the wife and I stopped there for dinner…we had a nice discussion with him on his choice of pinot vineyards for DeBaise wines…later he sent the Mrs. and I over a glass of Rudd Sauv blanc. …very nice of him

Winemaker Bob Levy was 2 table’s over

Press had an amazing Waygu filet

Is Press still around?

They are still at it at Press Marc.
